| 4470 | Class of 1963 PACS Carl Walburgh Asheville - One hundred people in the U.S. die every year from falling trees. There is a 1 in 20,000,000 chance that you may be struck by a tree and die. It happened on September 28th, as Dr. C. Eric Walburgh was travelling home on his motorcycle, with friends. A huge tree fell and killed him instantly. A tree? Really?! Eric was a man of wisdom, courage and fortitude. He possessed an exciting zest for life. Whether he was sailing or motorcycling, he sought a high level of proficiency. He loved to cook and was an avid reader. Long walks with his three dogs brought him joy and peace. However, the core of his life was his love of his work. Eric's work was his life. He was extremely dedicated to his service at Mission Children's Hospital. He was a skilled and respected surgeon, devoted to his young patients and their families. Dr. Walburgh's skill and excellence allowed him to successfully operate on our nation's first in-vitro baby, and on premature babies who weighed less than one pound. Prior to his service at Mission Hospital, Dr. Walburgh spent 13 years in Norfolk, Virginia in clinical practice at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, where he served as Chief of the Department of Surgery, and as Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Walburgh is survived by his best friend and beloved wife, Regie, his brother, Tom Walburgh and wife, Sharon Walburgh of Alpharetta, Georgia, and a host of loving friends, colleagues and grateful patients. He was born on February 17, 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland, and was raised in upstate New York. Dr. Walburgh graduated from Brown University in 1967 with a degree in the Classics, and earned his M.D. degree from the State University of New York's Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. At Montreal Children's Hospital McGill University, he trained in pediatric surgery. Dr. Walburgh was board certified by the American Board of Surgery, with Special Competence in Pediatric Surgery. He received an M.B.A. from the University of South Florida in 1993. Dr. Walburgh was a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of both the American Pediatric Surgical Association and the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons. Arrangements for a memorial service are underway; details will be available through Asheville Mortuary Services, at www.ashevillemortuaryservices.com. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Eric's life. To recognize his commitment and dedication to his work at Mission Children's Hospital, a fund to support children's health has been created. He was born October 25, 1944 in Oswego. He graduated from Pulaski Academy and Central School in 1963 with honors. He was predeceased by his parents, Owen and Gladys Miner Hager. He was employed on the Nicholson Farm, the Douglaston Manor Farm and his last employment was with the Fulton Companies, retiring in 2006. Surviving his twin brother, Alan (Joyce) Hager of Pulaski and one sister, Geraldine Hager of Mapleview. Graveside funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday in South Richland Cemetery in Fernwood. Miller, 58, of Union Springs, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at University Hospital, Syracuse. She was born May 9, 1945, daughter of Arthur and Mary Chapman Miller. She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1963. She was employed by TRW in Union Springs for several years. She had previously lived in Auburn and Pulaski. Surviving are two daughters, Dianna Richardson Sanderson of Mexico, and Tammy Knapp of Phoenix; her companion, Kenneth Weldon of Union Springs; her mother, Mary Miller, and her brother, Paul Miller, both of Pulaski. She was predeceased by one son, Scott Richardson, who died Oct. 3, 1983. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park St., Pulaski. Diane was born April 22, 1945 in Watertown, NY to Lem and Jeanette (Fuller) Wilder. She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1963. Diane married Richard Labenski in 1970. Mr. Labenski died in 1998. Diane enjoyed knitting, crocheting, watching TV, her dogs and the lobster her son sent her each year. Surviving are her children; Eileen Labenski, Richard Labenski, Jr., Leslie (Al) Barone, Lisa Labenski; sisters, Judith Tighe, Wendy Fox and many friends. There are no services at this time.
