653 About 1820 Lindall Wilder and his father came in and settled west of the village. The former died in Scriba in December, 1885, aged ninety-two. The year 1820 also marks the settlement of the Salisbury family in Sandy Creek, where three generations have been prominent and influential. The first corners of the name were Reuben, sr., and his son, Reuben, jr. The latter, born in Vermont. December 21, 1799, built a mill at Hadley's Glen and another at Lacona, and moved thence to near Petersburg, Va., where he purchased a farm. He was a deacon of the Baptist church. Hiring slaves, he allowed them in the room while he read the Bible and prayed, and in consequence -excitement ran high. His neighbors, organizing a party, searched his house and ordered him to leave the country, which he did, leaving his farm from which he never realized anything. He returned to Sandy Creek and died March 4, 1874. Mason Salisbury 2d, born in 1810, was active in the "underground railroad," was a miller, served as justice of the peace several years and as assemblyman, and died in March, 1877. His son M. J. served two years in the Rebellion and now conducts the grist mill in Sandy Creek, which he rebuilt in i885. Near the site his father remodeled an old mill, which finally passed to M. J. Salisbury and was burned in December, 1884. Dea. Enos Salisbury, born in Vermont in 1806 came here at an early day, married first, Rebecca Tuttle and second, Esther W. Alton, and died December 13, 1894. He was a member of the Baptist church fifty-seven years and served most of the time as deacon. Benjamin F. Salisbury, son of Nathan, was born here in 1824 and died September 16, 1885. His father was an early tavernkeeper on the north side of the creek in the village and was succeeded by his son. The hotel was burned in 1884. Salisbury, Mason (I84011)

654 About 5 p. m. on Tuesday at his residence, two miles east of this village, James C. Buss died suddenly, aged 59 years. As it was during a heavy electric storm it was believed at first that lightning was the cause, but no trace of it could be found on the body or on the veranda where he was lying to rest after a hard day's work. He was an honest, industrious man, a good neighbor, a kind and indulgent husband and father, and will be greatly missed. The deceased was born in Vernon and came to this place eight years ago. There survive the wife, one son and two daughters, Eugene of this place, Mrs. M. G. Spoden of Utica and Mrs. Arthur Snow of Parish, and seven grandchildren.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, April 29, 1896 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Memorial - Entered into peaceful rest at the home of her parents, Jefferson Avenue, Pulaski. New York, April 26th, 1896, at 12:20 a.m., Sarah S. Bentley. Sarah Seymour Bentley was the second daughter of William H. and Carrie Woods Bentley and was born March 27th, 1870. She leaves three younger sisters, Carrie W., Mary F. and Helen E. Bentley, and one brother, Norman S. Bentley. Most of the first five years of her life were spent in Brooklyn, New York, where her parents then resided. Returning to Pulaski in 1875, she received her education in the schools here until she was 17 years of age, when she moved with her parents to Toronto, Canada. Here she resided five years, three of which she spent at Moulton's Ladles College, at which fine institution of learning she showed excellent scholarship. In 1893 she came back to Pulaski and with her family again took up her residence here, where she spent most of the remainder of her life. She united with the Congregational church, of this village, when 16 years of age, and has been a devoted helper in its works and enterprises since, and for several years before. She was a thorough student of the Bible and got from its inspiring pages the spirit for her works. While she calmly sleeps the influence of her life will live to profit and bless all who knew her. With unselfishness and excited Christian virtues she ministered to many in those things which elevate and enable life. What she failed to accomplish in her life with us she will most certainly accomplish in the change from the circle on earth to the hosts of the redeemed above. Her house was ever in order and in view of the malady which she knew made her earthly slay limited, she lived so that any day might be the last and each day was closed with that attention to every detail that made it possible to lay down the burdens or lie without regret over incomplete work. She was ever ready for the coming of the heavenly bridegroom and never without a well-trimmed and well filled lamp. In her home she was an inspiration to father, mother, sisters and brother; in her church she had an identity for her interesting influences and in her social life she profited her associates by her gentleness and strong individuality. The community is united in profound sympathy for the family from whose circle her personal presence has been removed. The funeral will be held from the house at three o'clock this afternoon.

THE DESCENDANTS OF ADAM MOTT

Adam Mott is the first heard of in 1645, when he was of New York. On the 28th of July, 1647, he married there, Jane Hulet, he then as from county Essex, and she, a maid, from county Buckingham. His oldest children Adam and James were baptized in New York. Ten years later he was settled at Hempstead, on the north shore, where he continued to reside until his death. There are several important documents upon record concerning him. One, dated 1682, enumerates his "four sonns by my Frist wiffe Jane Mott, viz. Addam, Jeams, John and Joseph". The second ins his will, dated March 12, 1681-2, wherein he names his "eldest son Adam," sons James, John, Joseph and Gershom, dau. Grace, three children of his deceased son Henry, "youngest son Adam," wife Elizabeth and "all ye children I have by her". The third document is an agreement dated 1691 by which the widow confirms certain lands to sons by the first marriage, viz. Adam, James, John and Joseph, being joined therein by one of her own sons, Richbell, probably the only one then of age. The las of these documents is a release given by John Okeson, in 1703, (who had meantime married the youngest daughter by the second wife,) of his interest in the estate which Adam Mott "did give to his six youngest children which he had by his last wife Elizabeth, unto Richbell Mott, William Mott, Charles Mott and Adam Mott, Jr.

The second wife of Adam Mott was the daughter of Ann, the wife of John Richbell of Mamaroneck, probably by a previous husband whose name was Redman. She married not long prior to Nov., 5, 1691, Robert Hubs, and was living as late as 1698, as his wife.

Adam Mott died probably a little while before Apr. 5, 1690.

His children were:-

Adam2, James2, Henry2, Grace2, John2, Joseph2, Gershom2, by the first wife, and

Richbell2, Maryanne2, Elizabeth2 , William2, Charles2, and Adam2 by the second wife.

Of the daughters, Grace married Jonathan Smith, Jr., and Elizabeth mar. John Okeson.

notes

"In 1659. Richard Vallingtyne was one of the five chosen Townsmen of the town of Hempstead. The other four were Francis Wicks, Robert Marvin, Adam Mott and Richard Brutnall."

From The American Genealogist Vol. 35, page 107:

"Another Adam Mott came to Newbury, Mass., and later migrated to Long Island. In the shipping list in 1638 he was aged 19 years, and in his will in 1681 he called himself aged about 60. At his marriage to his first wife, Jane Hallet, in 1647, the Dutch Church records of New Amsterdam enter him as from Essez County. This Adam Mott had children by his first wife named James, Grace, Henry, John, Joseph and Gershom.

"The Saffron Walden Parish Registers contain the following baptisms of children of James and Grace Mott:

Adam, 21 Jan 1620/1
Henry, 31 May 1623
George, 20 Nov. 1625.

"It will be noted that the Adam baptized 1620/1 was of the proper age to be the Long Island settler, and that the names James, Grace and Henry correspond. James Mott, father of the above Adam, may possibly have been son of a Mr. George Mott who was buried at Saffron Walden 7 Feb. 1614/15.

"Probably the two Adams were closely related. Further research in Essex and Cambridgeshire is indicated."
comments

"Adam Mott born 1596 son of John Mott, went to MA on the DEFENCE. He later moved to RI when his father joined him They both seemed to have died in 1661. This Adam is the progenitor of the "RI and CT Motts" His cousin, Adam Mott born 1621 son of JAMES MOTT (brother of John) went to NY on the BEVIS in 1639. He lived on Long Island and is the progenitor of the "NY Motts"

"The father of James and John was JOHN Mott of Saffron Walden. It is very common to mix these two families and to get the Adams confused."
