8911 Death Certicate Shows Birthday 8 Jun 1854

According to Anne Urevick family lore says Thomas was a fireman and bar owner in Plymouth, PA. He was a colorful character, very popular around town.

Newspaper Article - Friday, December 8, 1905 Wilkes-Barre Times - Wilkes-Barre, PA - Fell over Embankment - An action in tresspass for the recovery of $10,000 was instituted today by Thomas Fleming against Plymouth township. About six weeks ago the plantiff was walking along an unprotected highway and as it was dark, he fell over the embankment, eight feet in height. As a result of the accident his leg was broken. The plantiff is still confined in the hospital. Attorneys James T. Brennan and James L. Lenahan represent the plantiff.

Newspaper Obituary - Friday, July 5, 1907 Wilkes Barre Record - Wilkes Barre, PA - Drowned In River - Plymouth Man Falls From Boat With Fatal Results - Companions Try to Save Him, But Are Unable to Keep Him From Going Under - Body Was Not Recovered at a Later Hour - Thomas Flemming, a well known resident of Plymouth, was drowned in the river yesterday afternoon while returning to his home after spending a few hours with a number of companions on the east side of the stream. Mr. Flemming, accompanied by Edward Easen, John Gneiss, William Johns and Thomas Jones, had entered a row boat but a few minutes before the accident to row to the Plymouth side at the foot of Ferry street, but in some manner the boat upset and all were thrown into the river. The spot where the accident occurred was quite deep and all struggled to save themselves. Mr. Flemming on account of accidents had his leg broken on two different occasions and the limb being still quite stiff, he could do nothing to save himself. Mr. Easen went to his rescue, holding him up as long as he possibly could, thinking the others would come to his rescue, but they did not, and in order to save himself he had to let go, with the result that Flemming went to the bottom and was drowned. Deceased was a resident of Plymouth for a great many years. During the years he was employed in the mines he met with no accident of any consequence, but since retiring he broke his right leg twice, and since the last accident it was necessary for him to carry a crutch. He was one of the best known residents of the West Side. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. James Kinney, Miners Mills; Mrs. John Hartman, this city; Mrs. Edward Kinney(Kennedy), with whom deceased made his home; Mrs. Patrick Kinney, Mary, Agnes, and Frank. A prompt effort was made to secure the body, but up to midnight it had not been found.

Newspaper Article - Tuesday, March 12, 1907 Wilkes-Barre Times - Wilkes-Barre, PA - - DAMAGES FOR INJURIES ON TRIAL IN COURT - Thomas Fleming claims $25,000 from Plymouth Township - Fell from a trestling - At Welsh Hill and was seriously hurt - Case of Freeman against Traction company nearing end. - Twenty-five thousand dollars are claimed by Thomas Fleming in his suit against Plymouth township, which was placed on trial before Judge Wheaton in court room No. 2 this morning. The action grows out of a serious fall which the plantiff had on September 5, 1905, while crossing a trestling which spans a creek in the defendant township. The creek is at the foot of Welsh Hill. According to the plantiff he was walking along the car tracks, which are near the trestling, and to get out of the way of a car he stepped as he supposed on the trestling. Instead of finding the trestling he landed in the creek below, a distance of ten feet. The plantiff also alleges that it was very dark on the night of the accident, and that the trestling was not protected. As the result of the fall the plantiff had his left arm broken and was otherwise seriously injured. Attorneys James L. Lenahan and James Brennan represent the plantiff, while Attorneys John F O'Boyle and James H. Shea are for the township.

Newspaper Obituary - Friday, July 5, 1907 Wilkes-Barre Times - Wilkes Barre, PA - Drowned in Sight of his Companions: Thos Fleming Unable to Swim Owing to An Accident. Body is Recovered Today - Rocking a Boat the Cause of His Death - Friends Unable to Assist. In sight of four companions, Thomas Fleming, aged 53 years, of Ferry Street, Plymouth, was drowned in the Susquehanna rvier at a point a short distance below the Carey avenue bridge yesterday afternoon. Fleming was one of a party of five men that left in a row boat for the east side of the bridge. In the party were Thomas Jones, Edward Easen, William Johns and John Nneiss. They spent the day on the Wilkes-Barre side and were returning home between 3 and 4 oclock pm, when one of the men started to rock the boat. The craft capsized and all five were thrown into the water. Jones, Kneise, and Johns swam ashore. Fleming, who was crippled from injuries he received some months ago in an accident, was unable to help himself, and was sinking when Easen went to his assistance. Easen kept the drowning man afloat but became exhausted, and was in danger of being drowned himself and was compelled to leave Fleming to his fate. 8930 Death of Mrs. Matilda Hendershot
Last evening at 6 o'clock Mrs. Matilda Hendershot passed to her final reward. This incident in the death has deeply depressed her son, Fuller R Hendershot, our popular townsman, who was at her bedside when the end came. Mrs. Hendershot made her home with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Dennis Hendershot at Firwood and she came here two weeks ago to visit Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kreller on Vine street and while there was taken ill with a severe cold and latter she suffered a stroke of paralysis which hastened the end. Her death occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kreller, whom she was visiting, and her demise was due to general debility. Matilda (Whitman) Hendershot was born on Dec 11, 1824 at Easton, Northampton County. Her family removed to what was then known as the Nanticoke Dam, now West Nanticoke, in 1832, where she was married to her husband, Samuel Hendershot, who died in 1879. They removed to Plymouth in 1836 and here she has resided ever since, being generally know and one of the most estimable and highly respected women residents of this section. She was widely known in the community and was highly esteemed by all who knew her. She was an affectionate mother and a kind neighbor. She was a Christian in every sense of the word and was admired for her excellent traits of character. She was charitable and had a kind word for everybody and after 84 years of life she has ended a true Christian life. Mrs. Hendershot was peculiar in some respects, although in her eighty-fourth year at the time of her death was adverse to the present mode of traveling, as she never rode on a street car but on two occasions, and never once did she ride on a steam train, preferring at all times to walk or ride in a carriage to the end of her destination. Her remains were removed last evening to the home of her son, Fuller R Hendershot, on East Main Street, from which place the funeral will be held. Deceased in survived by two sons, Fuller R Hendershot and Angelo J Hendershot, both of this place; also eleven grandchildren. The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 with services at the house. Interment will be made in the Forty Fort cemetery. -- The Times Leader, Feb 13, 1909
