9056 Delos B. Hager - 1850 - June 23, 1899. Son of Gardiner and Mary Hager. Husband of Emma S. Hager. Section 2, Row 10.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, June 28, 1899 Mexico Independent - Mexico, New York - Delos Hager and Son Killed by Lightening - Delos Hager, aged 55, and his son, Orla, aged 20, were struck by lightening and instantly killed two miles south of Manlius while seeking refuge beneath a load of hay from a severe electrical and rainstorm which passed over that village and vicinity between 9 and 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. A younger son, who was with the Hagers, the team of horses attached to the load and a dog that had sought shelter with the men beneath the wagon were simultaneously struck by the bolt. The boy was knocked unconscious, the horses and dog were killed and the hay was consumed by fire. The storm was of short duration and passed over the little community without inflicting further damage, as far as is known. The party had loaded their wagon when the grumbling storm first made its appearance, darkening the heavens and foreboding trouble with an occasional roar of thunder and a flash of lightening. The trio started homeward when the rain began to fall in torrents and they sought shelter underneath the overhanging load. They had been there but a short time when a bolt struck the hay and Hager and his son, the team and dog were instantly killed. The younger boy, who was about 14 years old, was rendered insensible, and upon reviving he hastened to the house and notified the family of the catastrophe. The two lifeless bodies were removed to the family home and Dr. Merwin was summoned from Manlius to attend the youth, who had been quite badly burned. Syracuse Post Standard. (Mr. Delos Hager and his family formerly lived at Texas, in this town. He is survived by his widow, a son and daughter. His son Orla leaves a wife and one child. We learn that Orla's life was insured for $1,000. They had many friends in Texas who deeply deplore the sad event, and sympathize sincerely with the stricken ones. The funeral was held at Texas on Sunday, and was very largely attended. Rev. Mr. Brown officiated, assisted by Rev. Mr. Curtis. - Ed. Ind.)

9068 Dennis C. Morton - 1858 - November 13, 1941. William and Arvilla Wright Morton. Husband of Mary C. Courteville. Section 3, Row 16.
Newspaper Obituary - Saturday, November 15, 1941 Oswego Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Dennis Morton, Hero Of Marine Rescue, Is Dead - Helped Save Crew and Passengers From Steamer Phinney, Aground On Ford Shoals - Pulaski, November 15 - Dennis Morton, oldest son in a family which has made history in sailing and fishing in Lake Ontario, and hero of one of the most thrilling rescues recorded in Oswego marine circles, died Thursday evening. While he had not been in good health for some time, few of his many friends knew that he was seriously ill. After training as a fisherman out of Port Ontario, Mr. Morton enlisted as a young man in what was then known as the Life Saving service, now a part of the U. S. Coastguard, and was assigned to the Oswego Station, then under the command of Capt. John Blackburn, father of the late Robert G. Blackburn, for many years chief of Oswego Fire department. During the fall in the early 80's the Oswego crew was notified by a breathless farmer who had driven into the city, that a large steamer was aground on Ford Shoals, five miles west of Oswego, and apparently a large number of people were in imminent danger of drowning. High seas made it impossible for the crew to proceed by water and a surfboat, then the standard equipment, was loaded on wheels and drawn up the lake shore to a point on Snake Swamp opposite the wreck. By this time there were many people on the shore watching the stricken vessel and with the aid of volunteers and the regular crew a number of attempts were made to launch the boat. Each time before it passed the huge breakers the boat was capsized and the crew thrown into the water. Finally when several had been slightly injured and all were suffering from exposure, the quest had to be abandoned. Capt. Blackburn, however, was determined to save the people on the steamer and back at the station was a new so-called "English" life boat, a non-sinkable, non-capsizable craft which was to be the forerunner of present day boats in the service. He took his crew back to Oswego and called for volunteers to man this boat. All who were not injured reported, including Mr. Morton. The services of the tug Charley Ferris, long a landmark in Oswego harbor, were obtained, and after a heart breaking battle against head winds, the life boat landed in a position to the leeward of the wreck. From this point they were able to make the rescue, several nerve wracking trips being necessary, according to Mr. Morton's recollection. The steamer was the George C. Phinney, bound from Chicago to Oswego with passengers and cargo. Mr. Morton recalled that the steamer lay on the rocks at the shoals all that winter, but was so protected by ice that she did not suffer too great damage and in the spring was successfully hauled off. Mr. Morton had a number of years in the Life Saving service and took part in many rescues, including several under the Fort banks at Oswego, under the command of Capt. George Anderson, but none as thrilling or dangerous as that at Ford Shoals. For a number of years he had lived on a little farm on the Scenic highway between Port Ontario and the entrance to the State Park, with his wife, who died a few months ago. He was born at Port Ontario and was in his 84th year. He was a son of William and Arvilla Morton, pioneer residents of that hamlet who lived to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary, the oldest married couple in northern New York at the time of their death a few years ago. While he had been away much of the time during his early years, he had always retained a home in the neighborhood of Port Ontario. He was a member of Pulaski lodge 648, IOOF. He is survived by two sons, Ray Morton of Buffalo, and Glen Morton who is in the Coast Guard service at Fairport, Ohio; and two brothers, Alonzo and William Morton of Port Ontario. Funeral services will be held at his late home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. W. Raymond Rogers and the Odd Fellows lodge. Burial will be in Daysville cemetery.

9073 Dennis Wright - April 19, 1761 - May 17, 1847. Husband of Lois B. Newell Wright.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, May 20, 1847 Richland Courier - Pulaski, New York - Died - In this village on the morning of the 17th inst., at the residence of his son Dr. Newell Wright, Dennis Wright, in the 87th year of his age. Mr. Wright was born in North Castle, Westchester county, New York, where he resided until the close of the Revolutionary War, the sufferings of which with the cruelties inflicted by the British and Torres in their predatory warfare he was obliged to share. His father’s estate said to have been considerable, was entirely wasted by burning, robberies and the depreciation in value of Continental money, so that Dennis commenced in business with no other capital than industry, perseverance and economy, which with the assistance of a most excellent and pious companion and the blessings of Providence, enabled him to gain a competence, and something to spare to the poor and less fortunate of his fellow men, and to liberally support the institutions of religion, the hopes of which were early embraced by both himself and wife, and the peace and consolation of which were most richly and abundantly bestowed in the decline of life, the day of sickness and the ultimate hour of death.

--immigrant ancestor of the New England family, came to America about 1630 and settled at Braintree, Massachusetts;--thento Wenham then Chelmsford;-supposedly the name is actually Spalding and the u was added by some of the descendants in New England;--
The surname Spalding or Spaulding appears quite early in England. Some authorities believe it is derived from the town of Spalding, in Lincolnshire. The Spauldings of America, excepting a few families that have come recently, are descended from three early settlers. The Spaldings of Georgia are descended from the Ashantilly Spaldings of Perthshire, Scotland, of the same family as Sir Pierce Spalding, who surrendered Berwick Castle to the earl of Murray;--the Spaldings in America who came into the country during the first century of our colonial history represented three separate families, one of which became seated in Massachusetts, another in Maryland, and the third in Georgia;--

another source: :He first appears in New England at Braintree, Mass., and was made freeman 13 May 1640. He was at Wenham, Mass., a short time, 1654, and in 1655 was one of the founders of Chelmsford,---"--resident of James Cittie, Virginia, (Jamestown), 1619; came to "James Cittie" with Sir George Yeardley 1619 and shortly thereafter made his way north from Virginia to New England; settled at Braintree, Mass. 1630; then Wenham, 1645; and soon afterwards to Chelmsford, Mass.
