| 9421 | Edmund A. Bohanan - drowned September 28, 1884. Son of Alpheus Albert and Mary Ann Corbin Bohanan. Husband of Louisa Bohanan & Charlotte Poitier & Mary Ann Hager. Section and Row unknown, stone is missing. Newspaper Obituary - Friday Evening, October 3, 1884 Times and Express - Oswego, New York - Funeral of Edmund A. Bohanan - Port Ontario, October 2 - The funeral of Edmund A. Bohanan who was drowned off the mouth of Deer Creek, near Selkirk, Sunday night, September 28th, was held in Selkirk Bethel Church Wednesday October 1st, Rev. H. H. Tillapaugh officiating. The church was crowded to its utmost capacity and the services were very impressive throughout. The beautiful casket was surmounted with a floral cross and wreath, and upon the altar table stood a miniature ship composed of flowers. From the well known words of the Psalmist, David, "here is but a step between me and death," the pastor preached an impressive discourse. The choir of the church assisted by Mr. Hartwell Douglass of Sand Hill, rendered appropriate music. After bring looked upon for the last time the remains were taken to Sand Hill cemetery for interment. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, October 2, 1884 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - Drowned at Port Ontario - On Monday last, Dr. H. W. Caldwell, coroner, held the inquest on the body of Mr. Edward Bohanan, a young married man who had lived at Selkirk. From the evidence taken at the inquest, it appears the deceased had, on Sunday morning, walked from Selkirk to Sandy Pond for the purpose of renting a small net to fish for bullheads. After staying there until about five o'clock, Mr. George H. Best, proprietor of the hotel at Sandy Pond, started with a sailboat to take Bohanan back to Selkirk. A heavy storm of rain, accompanied by a regular squall or a small hurricane, came upon them so suddenly that the boat capsized. Best, a man about 56 years of age, that once undressed himself or nearly so, but Bohanan kept his clothes on. The two men, when the heavily ballasted boat sank from under them, started to swim to the shore, Mr. Best saying, "Ed, we have got a swimming match before us." After swimming for some time, both men became exhausted, but Bohanan was the most affected because of his heavy clothing. At last, after saying "good-bye, good-bye" several times, the poor fellow, completely tired out and unable to struggle on the waves and darkness longer, not knowing how much farther he would have to swim, gave up and sank beneath the water. He was close to shore and where the water was about ten feet deep. Best preserved a little longer and soon reached the shore. He was swimming, he thinks, over half an hour in all. He at once summoned assistance and returned to the scene of the wreck with Mr. Holmes and deceased's brother, George Bohanan. The body was soon found as was the boat also. Mr. Best swore that Mr. Bohanan had not been drinking and was sober. He stated that he, Bohanan, seem to be confident he could swim to shore or he would have taken off his clothes. "Tonight was very dark and stormy," says Best, "it might have been 200 feet from the shore where Ed went down; encouraged him and told him not to give up; could tell by his voice that he was weak and exhausted; was cold and exhausted myself when I reached the shore." Dr. E. F. Kelley, of this village, was the second witness sworn. He had examined the body. His testimony was to the effect that the deceased came to his death by drowning; no marks of violence on the body. George H. Bohanan, brother of deceased, testified to finding the boat and also the body in the water. Deceased was about 27 years old. Percival Holmes was also sworn. He assisted George Bohanan and Mr. Rose in taking the body out of the water. P. Stewart, another witness, testified that he removed clothing from the body of deceased; found $3.86 in money in his pockets, which he gave to wife of deceased by order of Coroner Caldwell. The eleven jurymen who served at the inquest were as follows: L. B. Cole, foreman, A. D. Harrington, John Preston, William Morton, John Tifft, John Bunn, A. Vorce, P. Stewart, J. S. Jones, L. G. North and Theo. Spencer. The verdict rendered was that the deceased, Edward Bohanan, came to his death by being capsized from a boat while on his way from Sandy Pond to Selkirk, and capsizing being the result of a sudden squall, and we the jury, censure no one for the act. | 9429 | Edna Jane McLean - July 30, 1872 - August 3, 1938. Daughter of Darwin and Anna Sweet Harris. Wife of Frederick Benjamin McLean. Section 5, Row 27. Newspaper Obituary - Monday, August 5, 1938 Oswego Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Mrs. McLean Dead At Fernwood Home - Husband and Son Find Woman in Chair On Return From Pulaski - Pulaski, August 5 ¬Returning to their home near the entrance to Selkirk Shores State Park, shortly after 11 o'clock Saturday evening after a business trip into Pulaski, Fred B. McLean, prominent farmer and artisan of the community, accompanied by his son, Jack Harris McLean, found Mrs. McLean dead seated in a chair before a card table where she had apparently been playing solitaire when stricken without warning with a heart attack. Dr. John L. H. Mason of Pulaski, who was summoned by telephone, found her beyond medical aid, although her body was still warm, indicating death had ensued only a few moments before the arrival home of Mr. McLean and his son. Mrs. McLean had not been in normal health for the past two or three months, during which she had developed a heart malady. She had rallied after several slight attacks and was thought to be on the way to eventual recovery as her condition had shown improvement in the past few weeks. She had prepared the evening meat and performed her evening household tasks as usual Saturday evening and chatted with her husband and son during the early evening before their departure for Pulaski. Mrs. McLean was one of the most beloved women within the town of Richland, in many homes of which she had rendered kindly assistance by illness of members of the household or for other causes, understanding, helpful, kindly and tactful, she had brought cheer into many a sick room and lightened the burden of sadness in many a home. In her own home her cheery kindness pervaded the hospitable welcome extended to all visitors there. Mrs. McLean was an active member of the Daysville Home Bureau_ She was formerly a member of the Daysville Grange. In her former home at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, she was identified with the Presbyterian church. In this community, however, she had been an attendant of the Fernwood Methodist Episcopal church. Edna Jane Harris was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, July 30, 1872, the daughter of Darwin and Anna Sweet Harris of that city. Her parents had been early settlers in Wisconsin, where they had removed from the east, her mother having been born near Moore's, New York, and her father being a native of Ohio. She attended the high school in her native city and grew to young womanhood there, where she was married December 7, 1891, to Frederick Benjamin McLean. At the time Mr. McLean was employed by the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad at Portage, Wisconsin, and they established their home in that place. Later they lived at Horicon, Wisconsin, until their removal in 1899 to Fond du Lac. For about 25 years Mr. McLean continued with the operating department of the same railroad and at the time of his retirement from active railroad work in 1909 he was yard master for the company at Fond du Lac. Following his retirement from the railroad, Mr. McLean moved his family to Clara City, Minnesota, where he purchased and operated a farm for six years, during which he served for four years as chairman of the town government. At the end of that time he disposed of his farm there and moved to the town of Richland, New York. From his father, George Benjamin Hunter McLean, who had been brought up at Lewiston, New York, after having been born near Niagara Falls, Ontario, F. B. McLean had heard much of the advantages of New York state as a place of residence, and he was motivated in coming to this state in part by his father's high regard for New York state and its opportunities. The elder McLean, who left Lewiston at the age of 15 in 1852 and traveled over the Great Lakes by a wood-burning steamer to reach Wisconsin, had been a pioneer settler at South Byron, Wisconsin, where he became the proprietor of a large general store, the operator of a grain elevator, and the owner of other extensive business interests. In Richland, Mr. and Mrs. McLean purchased the Hart Douglas farm, occupying a commanding rise of ground opposite the entrance to the Daysville cemetery on the present scenic highway, about midway between Mexico village and Port Ontario, the farm of about 200 acres being transferred to them by ick and Davis, the letter being the late Judge Freelon J. Davis of Pulaski, who had acquired the farm on a speculation. The McLeans renamed the farm "The Clover Lead Farm." In recent years it has been largely devoted to dairying activities while F. B. McLean and his son, Jack H. McLean, who, unmarried, has made his home with his parents, have devoted a part of their attention to the execution of building and masonry contracts and the direction of a force of employees engaged in performing maintenance work for members of the cottage colony at nearby Ramona Beach on the shores of Lake Ontario. F. B. McLean has been active politically in the town, and had been the candidate of his party for the office of justice of the peace and other offices in the town of Richland on a number of occasions. Several years ago, Mr. and Mrs. McLean went to their former home in Wisconsin to visit relatives and friends and the scenes in which they spent so many years before removing to New York. They had recently been looking forward to a visit this fall from some of their Wisconsin relatives. Members of the Ramona Beach colony, by whom members of the McLean family have come to be greatly respected and beloved by reason of their contacts there, had also been making plans for observance this fall of an important wedding anniversary by Mr. and Mrs. McLean. Mrs. McLean is survived by the following, her husband, Frederick B. McLean; by a brother, Earl Harris of Dassel, Minnesota; and the following children: Mrs. Robert Smith of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Edward Gutchess of Camillus; Mrs. Lewis Sherman of Daysville, and Jack Harris McLean, at home; also by the following grandchildren, Robert Leland, Harold Gene, Kenneth Hugh, Marion Alice Adelle, Darrel Keith and Carlon Arlene Sherman, the last two named being twins born this year, and Jack Edward Gutchess. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the late home with the Rev. G. A. Butler of the Fernwood Methodist Episcopal church officiating. Interment will be made in the Daysville cemetery. | Harris, Edna Jane (I69270)

Hilton, living two miles east of Pulaski, on the Richland road, arose early, went to his garage, took a rope and placed it about his neck then attached it high enough to make his body hang above the floor and dropped from a standing place. His wife went to the garage to see why he was absent so long and found him dead. She quickly loosened the noose and then went to a neighboring farmhouse and called Dr. F. W. Crocker, who immediately motored to the Hilton barn. An examination of the body indicated that Mr. Hilton had been dead some time. Dr. Leroy F. Hollis of Lacona, health officer of Sandy Creek came, examined the body, took the statements of Mrs. Hilton and others and declared the death was due to suicide and signed the death certificate accordingly. The body was removed to the undertaking rooms of Paul K. Foster and prepared for burial. Later it was removed to the family home. Mr. Hilton was a well-known farmer and had passed practically all his life near here, where he has been engaged in farming. He was born September 10, 1876, in the town of Orwell, where he had lived many years. Besides his widow, Mrs. Nora Hilton, he is survived by three sons, Earl Hilton of Rochester; Harold Hilton of Ilion and Lester Hilton of Geneva; one daughter, Mrs. Erma Cole, of Harrisville; his father, Hiram Hilton, of Pulaski; and three brothers, William Hilton and Arthur Hilton of Pulaski and Burton Hilton of Lacona.
