| 9757 | Ernest L. Stowell died suddenly at his home in So. Jefferson St., last Wednesday night. Mr. Stowell, who for years has been employed by the Chas. Tollner's Sons Co. worked as usual all day, and spent the evening with his family, making no complaint of feeling ill. He retired early and about midnight his wife was awakened by his labored breathing. Death followed before a physician could be reached. Coroner Leroy F. Hollis, of Lacona, was called but decided that an inquest was unnecessary. Dr. F.E. MacCallum signed the death certificate giving as the cause of the death acute indigestion. Mr. Stowell was born April 17, 1861 in the town of Sandy Creek, son of Hira m and Charlotte Stowell and had been a resident of this village more than 10 years. Surviving, besides his widow, are a son, Richard Stowell, who lives at home, and four daughters, Mrs. William Green, Mrs. Clyde Lacelle, Miss Charlotte Stowell and Miss Mary Stowell, all of Pulaski. Pond, 64, of 109 Potter Ave. Brownville, for the past 15-1/2 years station agent at Brownville for the New York Central Railroad, died suddenly of a heart attack about 5:00 Thursday afternoon while driving his automobile along State Street, directly opposite Park Drive. Mr. Pond, employee of the railroad continuously for the past 45 years, more than 40 of them as agent of various stations, was on route with his wife to the home of their daughter, Mrs. John M. Lenz, near Black River, for supper when he was fatally stricken. At a point opposite the confectionery store of Mrs. Maybell I. Eveleigh, 1311 State Street, he suddenly slumped into the arms of his wife. The car came to a stop and Mrs. Pond sought aid from a passerby. One of them, Miss Mildred L. Greene, 1988 State Street, a registered graduate nurse, stopped and she found Mr. Pond was evidently beyond medical aid. He had apparently died almost instantly. The Reed & Benoit ambulance, called to the scene, removed him to the House of Good Samaritan, where Dr. J. A. Mishkin, his attending physician, pronounced Mr. Pond dead upon arrival at 5:25 p.m. Police were notified and Patrolman Nicholas Bura investigated. Mr. Pond had been afflicted with a heart condition for years, but worked regularly and was at work as usual Thursday. He had been under treatment in hospitals on various occasions during the past ten years for a heart condition. Surviving him, besides his wife, Mrs. Celia E. Greenley Pond, are six children, Mrs. John M. (Grace E.) Lenz, near Black River, Mrs. Walter C. (Ruth C.) Oliver, Ilion, Mrs. Charles F. (Thelma H.) Seamans, Canadaigua, Mrs. Stephen J. Eveleigh, Massena, Eugene E. Pond, Brownville and Airman 2/c Glenn G. Pond, U.S. Air force, on duty at the Donaldson Air Base at Greenville, South Carolina, ten grandchildren, nieces and nephews and two brothers, Winfield D. Pond and Fred F. Pond, Adams Center. He was a member and past master of the Masonic Blue Lodge of Parish, a member of the Methodist Church of Brownville and formerly Parish, a member of the Railroad Telegraphers' Union, a former (sic) member of the board of education of Parish, of which he was clerk for 13 years, and a former mayor of Parish. Mr. and Mrs. Pond lived for 13 years in Parish, where all of their children were born. Mr. Pond was born July 2, 1890 near Fernwood, son of the late Adelbert and Josephine Manwarren Pond. He attended old Mexico Academy and began his railroad career as telegraph operator June 8, 1909, serving at various stations, including Fernwood, Richland and Altmar. Promoted to station agent March 17, 1914, Mr. Pond served that capacity at a number of stations, including Adams, Crocketts, near Rochester, Carlton, Kendall, Pulaski, Williamson, Maple View, Brewerton, Clay, Parish, where he served 13 years and finally Brownville, to which he was transferred January 3, 1939. He married Miss. Celia E. Greenley of Adams May 15, 1918. The ceremony was performed in Ogdensburg by Rev. S. S. Davis, then pastor of a Methodist Church of that city, who had been pastor of the Methodist Church of Adams. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 from the home and at 2:30 in the First Methodist Church of Brownville. Rev. Kenneth L. Combs, pastor of the church, will officiate. The body was found in the car with a garden hose connected to the exhaust of the auto, running into the car window. Assistant District Attorney Clarence J. Gorman, acting as coroner, gave a verdict of death by suicide, and released the body to Spencer Walton, Pulaski undertaker. The man was the father of three children, the youngest 2, and had worked on various WPA projects for the past few years, and was recently employed on the bridge construction north of this village. For some time, however, he had been out of work and friends believe that the man was despondent because he had been unable to find work. Ills wife is a patient in a hospital. He was last seen by John Kling an employee on the Harold Nicholson faun Friday afternoon. He was seen digging some potatoes on the place where he cultivated a small portion of land. He was the son of Henry Gokey of Pulaski, and was born in 1907. For the past several years he had been living at the Archie VanArsdale home near Daysville. Surviving are his father; his wife, Mrs. Mildred Baker Gokey, Daysville; three children, Ruth, 10, Robert, 8, and Betty, 2; and one sister, Mrs. Lucille Lamb of Syracuse. Corporal E. T. Williams and Trooper J. A. Radley of the Pulaski sub-station were summoned by Nicholson and Sassen when they discovered the body, and the troopers in turn notified Mr. Gorman. Erwin was born January 9, 1952, the son of Norman and Dorthea Wagner Kistner. He graduated from Pulaski High School in 1971. He served in the United States Navy Reserves for 16-years before retiring in 2001. Ewin was married to his wife of 51-years, Sandra Dingman Kistner on June 16, 1973. He was employed by Finger Lakes Railway in Geneva for 13-years. He had previously been employed by Schoeller Technical Paper in Pulaski for 31 years. Erwin was a former member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Pulaski and most recently attended Fellowship Baptist Church in Colosse. He was a former volunteer with the Orwell and Richland Fire Departments. Edwin loved railroading and volunteered at Rail City in Sandy Creek, Sea Shore Trolly Museum in Maine and the Adirondack Scenic Railroad in Thendara. Surviving are his wife, Sandra Kistner of Pulaski, two children, Jason “Jake” Kistner and Michelle Kistner, both of Pulaski. No services will be held. For many years Mr. Beecher was extensively engaged in the lumber business. In 1879 he went into the mercantile business and conducted a general store until about seven years ago when he retired because of ill health. He held the office of justice of the peace in this town several terms and in 1886 served as supervisor. He is survived by his wife, one niece and five nephews. Ethel Smith Otis of Baldwinsville, NY, formerly of Adams Center, NY, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023. She was born June 5, 1938, to Charles and Mary Smith in Lacona, NY. She graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1956. Ethel had several occupations throughout her life including homemaker, caregiver, food service, electrical motor assembly, medical equipment production, retail associate, and small business supervisor. She was active throughout her life in the Adams Village Baptist Church, assisting with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School as well as daycare during church services. She helped to organize the Annual Church Bazaar and numerous other church projects/activities. She participated in the church choir as well as other musical events in the community hosted by the church choir. She served in leadership capacities on the Borad of Deacons and Women’s Fellowship Group. She served many years on the South Jefferson Ecumenical Council which encompassed helping within the community. Although Ethel held many “roles” within the church community, she was most comfortable working “behind” the scenes. She was always willing to fix a meal or help the sick or shut ins. She followed a life of service to God and those in need. She is survived by her two children, Judy (Chris) DiLiberto of Baldwinsville, NY, Philip (Roxanne) Leach of Solvay, NY, one brother, Herbert Smith of Richland, NY, along with grandchildren, Nicole (Sam Reid) Moriarty, Meghan Moriarty, Molly and Jenna DiLiberto, Philip Leach, Jr. and great granddaughter, Kylie Moriarty-Reid.
