Hilton Volunteer, Grange Member - Ethel Mae Syfert Hilton, 83, of 31 Hilton Road, died Saturday at her home. Mrs. Hilton did volunteer work in Pulaski and throughout Oswego County for more than 50 years including work with youth in 4-H programs, serving as a leader and area representative for more than 20 years. She also served on the Cornell Cooperative Extension Service Home Demonstration Executive Committee. She was an active member of New York State Grange throughout her adult life, and was a member of Pulaski Grange 730, where she held several offices, was chairwoman of various committees and promoted the Grange throughout the state. She was an active supporter of American Red Cross bloodmobiles and helped with fund-raising dinners for various organizations. She also was a volunteer for the Pulaski Day and Beautification Day celebrations, worked with disabled adults at Oswego County Opportunities and was named 1989 Citizen of the Year by the Pulaski Service Club. Born August 1, 1917, in Orwell, daughter of Evert and Livina Schappach Syfert, she graduated in 1934 from Sandy Creek High School. She married Richard W. Hilton on October 4, 1938. They purchased the Bass family farm in the Hinman District, where they operated a Holstein dairy farm for 40 years. Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Judith Clemens, Marshall, Missouri; a son, James R., Altmar; a sister, Dora J. Traphagan, Pulaski; a brother, Albert Syfert, Oak Hill, Florida, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Orwell. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. She attended Pulaski High School. She was married on October 4, 1920 to Herbert W. Minckler, who died in 1960. They owned and operated a farm on the Scenic Highway all their married life. Their daughter, Eleanor Saltalamachia, died in 1977. Mrs. Minclder was a member of the South Richland Grange. Surviving are a son, Norman G. at home; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Ethyle E. Miner, 79, Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Cato, a Watertown native, died Wednesday at her home.

Mrs. Miner worked at Sealright Company Inc., Fulton, American Brake Shoe, Rochester, and Crucible Steel, Solvay. She also operated Ethyle's Flora Shop and Greenhouse, Cato, for 22 years, moving to Florida in 1992.

Born Feb. 4, 1925, in Watertown, daughter of Adelbert and Hazel Brett Sauers, she graduated from Fulton High School in 1943, and IBM School, Rochester.

She married Howard C. Miner on Oct. 2, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Church, Fulton.

Surviving besides her husband are four sons, Lawrence, Dayton, Ohio, Raymond, Cato, Thomas, Ogdensburg, and Timothy, Blacksburg, Va.; three daughters, Theresa McDonald and Josephine Miner, both of Enid, Okla., and Dawn Louise Holmes, Weedsport; two sisters, Eunice Dailey, Cape Coral, and Mary Rasbeck, North Fort Myers, Fla.; a brother, Elmer Sauers, Cape Coral, 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Pulaski Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, June 13, 1934 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Mrs. Etta Roseck Bull, 69, wife of Robert Bull, died at her home at the corner, of Bridge and Niagara streets early last Friday, after an illness, of about three years. Mrs. Bull was born April 1, 1866 in Gananaque, Canada, daughter of the late Thomas and Julia Ingersoll Roseck. She was a member of the Methodist church of this village, and for several years was a member of the Women's Civic Club. She was married in 1917 and came here to make her home. Surviving are Mr. Bull and one niece, Mrs. W. A. Caster of Washington, D. C. The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon with burial in Riverside cemetery on Rome Street. Rev. Henry Bridge officiated.

The funeral and burial for Etta E. Van Alstyne, 84, formerly of 114 E. Main St., will be private.

Mrs. Van Alstyne died Sunday in Genesis HealthCare, Watertown.

Born Sept. 10, 1916, on Grindstone Island, daughter of Fred and Edith Mae Calhoun McConnell, she attended the island school.

During World War II, she worked for General Electric Co., Syracuse, and then worked at F.W. Woolworth Department Store, Jacksonville, Fla., for many years before moving to Watertown.

Marriages to Clifford Montondo and Robert Van Alstyne ended in divorce.

Surviving are three sons, Secil Montondo, Rogers, Ark., Terry Van Alstyne, Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Ronnie Van Alstyne, Apollo Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Catherine) Williams, Vidalia, Ga., Barbara Helmstetter, Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. Ronald (Dawn) Smith, Grapevine, Texas; four brothers, Melser McConnell and Buck McConnell, both of Mexico, Calvin McConnell, Rodman, and Peter McConnell, Lomita, Calif.; two sisters, Wealtha Prior, Watertown, and Lisa McConnell, Binghamton; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, Albert, George and Barney McConnell, died before her, as did four sisters, Doris Maloney, Jennie Brown, Jessie Mayo and Lanie McConnell.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, December 14, 1944 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Mrs. Etta Edwards Dies Suddenly Here - The family and friends of Mrs. Etta Jennie Edwards were shocked at the news of her sudden death last Saturday afternoon at her home in Factory street. Mrs. Edwards was 72 years old. She had not been seriously ill and had been about town late in the week. Death followed to heart attack Saturday. She was born in Adams Center January 26, 1872, daughter of Malcolm and Philomen Jerau [sic] Wilcox, and had lived in Pulaski since her childhood. She was past matron of Pulaski chapter, OES, and had also been active in the Rising Sun Rebekah Lodge and the Tuesday Study Club. She was a member of Pulaski Baptist church. Surviving are her husband, Archie Edwards; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Woods, Fredonia; one brother, A. D. Wilcox, Dawson, Iowa; two grandchildren, Lieut. James R. Woods, Columbus, Georgia, and Mrs. L. V. Dewey, Vero Beach, Florida, and two great-grandchildren, James R. Woods, Jr., and Ann Elizabeth Dewey. Funeral services were held at the family home at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Rev. Clifton R. Bohanan officiating. Burial was in Pulaski cemetery.

Etta Marian Suits, 71, of Stoneleigh Apartments died Friday at Oneida City Hospital after a long illness.

A native of Vernon, Mrs. Suits lived many years in Wampsville before moving to Canastota five years ago. Her husband, Jay, died June 13.

Mrs. Suits was a former member of Durhamville Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Jay P. Jr. of Canastota; a brother, Harley Scribner of Oneida Castle; two sisters, Corena Brown of Canastota and Mildred Zimmerman of Oneida; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Oneida, the Rev. Roger Bates officiating. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Higginsville.

Calling hours will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, 260 Main St.

9812 Ettna “Jake” Seeley, 72, of 106 Edgewood Ave. died yesterday at State University Hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Seeley was a former deputy chief of the Seneca River Volunteer Fire Department and formerly employed by the Goetzman and Newman Trucking Co. He retired eight years ago.

Mr. Seeley, who was a life resident of the Syracuse area, was a charter member of the Teamsters and Helpers Local Union 317.

Surviving are a stepson, Charles E. Galloway; two sisters, Mrs. Clarabelle Cardele and Mrs. Florence Owens; four brothers Olin, Lawrence, William and Leo; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Kompf Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The Rev. Roger A. Ruhman will officiate.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

Hilton, Orwell Man, Had Skull Fractured By Limb of Dead Tree - Funeral Eugene E. Hilton, 21, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Hilton, of Orwell, who died Tuesday in Ideal Rest Hospital, Orwell in felling trees near Orwell, was held Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The deceased, who was hurt Tuesday when a flying branch from a dead tree which was struck by a large tree Mr. Hilton and two of his men were cutting down, struck him on the head. He was rendered unconscious, and was treated throughout the day at a shack on the property until his brother Clarence, a Syracuse contractor, arrived and took him to Ideal Rest. A fractured skull and concussion of the brain was the cause of death. He had planned to go to Syracuse the first of the year and engage in the contracting business. He is survived by his parents, by three brothers, Clarence and O. J. Hilton, Syracuse, and F. S. Hilton, Eastwood; two sisters, Mrs. R. D. Barker, Marathon, and Miss D. May Hilton, Syracuse. His grandfather, Josiah Hilton, was a veteran of the Civil War and his great-grandfather, a Revolutionary War veteran. The family were pioneers in Orwell.

Services for Eugene G. Perry, 60, of 161 Charmouth Drive, who died Saturday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center after a long illness, will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Greenleaf Funeral Home, and 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Lawn Cemetery, Parish.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, 503 W. Onondaga St.

Mr. Perry was a former resident of Parish and had lived in Syracuse several years. He was a printer for the Syracuse Herald-Journal.

Mr. Perry was a member of the International Typographical Union. He was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Syracuse.

Surviving are his wife, Veronica Frego Perry; one daughter, Mary Jean Bilow of Syracuse; one son, John Perry of Poughkeepsie; six grandchildren; and three brothers, Joseph and Isaac Perry of Parish and Richard Perry of Atlanta.

The funeral for Eugene L. Cronk, Sr., 60 of Adams will be held at 11 am Thursday, September 7th at the Carpenter Stoodley Funeral Home, with Pastor Gene Hagelin officiating.

Burial will follow the service in the Adams Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 6th from 5 pm-8 pm.

Mr. Cronk passed away on September 3rd at his home holding his wife’s hand while under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

He was born in Watertown, NY on November 11, 1956 a son to Frederick “Larry” Cronk and Wilimina Reed Relyea. Eugene attended South Jefferson Central High School and married Catherine Mullin on June 16, 1979 at the Adams Assembly of God Church, Adams.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine, 2 sons, Eugene, Jr. (Jennifer), Adams; Anthony (Melissa), Adams; his daughter, Julie (Ryan) Pratt, Pulaski; and 11 grandchildren, His brother, Gordon Shawn Cronk, several nieces, nephews and a large extended family.

Eugene Cronk was predeceased by his father, mother, Aunt and Uncle Gordon (Pearl) Graves

Eugene worked as a self-employed mechanic in the Adams area. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, fishing and hunting with his family and friends and spending time with his grandchildren. Eugene was known for his mechanical skills and great sense of humor.

Born Feb. 26, 1936, in Perry, son of the late Harry and Marie Hocking Calkins.
A Chautauqua County resident most of his life he had attended Cassadaga Valley Central School. Jay was a veteran of the Korean conflict serving with the U.S. Army in Korea as a radio operator with the 59th Sig. Co. Eighth Army, whose function was directing air strikes for the Air Force and Navy jet pilots.
He was employed for 18 years with Dawson Metal, retiring in 1994. He was proud of his fellow employees and believed they were the best anywhere. Jay loved riding Harley Davidson Motorcycles and had owned four over the years. Besides his family, he also enjoyed his cats, Harley and Mooch.
Loving fiance of Marcie Steward; mother of his children, Belva Calkins; father of Margaret (Albert) Dunn, Christopher (Leanne) and Douglas (Michele) Calkins, all of Jamestown; Grandfather of eight; great-grandfather of seven and the late Carl Dunn; brother of Lois (Donald) Peterson of Celeron, Phyllis (James) Peck of Palm Coast, Fla., Daniel B. Wyman Died at 81 In Sandy Creek - Eugene L Wyman, 81, a storekeeper at Sandy Pond for many years, died at his home yesterday. Mr. Wyman was born in Richland January 17, 1874. He attended schools there and on November 15, 1893 he married Jessie P. Calkins at New Haven. He worked as a New York Central Railroad trainman from 1891 to 1922, when he moved to Sandy Pond and operated a general store there until five years ago. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainman. Besides his wife, he is survived by a brother Claude Wyman; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Weston & Woodward Funeral Home, Sandy Creek. The Rev. James Pauley, pastor of the Pulaski Methodist Church will officiate. Eugenia "Jane" Dashnaw, 80, of 231 Lehigh Road, died Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Syracuse.

Mrs. Dashnaw lived in Watertown before moving to Pulaski in 1948 and retired in 1983 from Douglaston Manor, after 15 years of service. She also was a cook at Cedar Post Restaurant, owned Dashnaw's Beauty Shop in Watertown and was a beautician in New York City.

Born May 16, 1917, in Cortland, a daughter of Andrew and Kathryn Kulick Kozakewicz, she married Claude O. Dashnaw II in 1942. He died April 9, 1958.

Surviving are three sons, Claude O. III, Brasher Falls, and Fred A. and Carl R., both of Pulaski; a daughter, Erica M. Roberts, Pulaski; two brothers, Rudy Kozak, Parish, and Vito John Kozak, Syracuse; a sister, Olga Bury, Syracuse; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home. Spring burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Both sides of her family dated back to the Mayflower Compact as original signers. She was a seamstress and dressmaker in Oswego as a young woman. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Thomas P. Eva Dorith Laveck, 89, formerly of 5805 Route 11, died Monday evening of cancer of the pancreas at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Brandon J. (Mary L.) Hicks Sr., 240 Miller Road, Lacona, where she had lived for more than 15 years. She had been diagnosed with cancer in December.

Mrs. Laveck and her husband, Howard E., operated a small farm on Route 11 and sold poultry in Syracuse. Mr. Laveck died Nov. 18, 1948.

She also cleaned local homes and businesses, including for 19 years offices of Blount Lumber Co., Lacona, and worked in adults homes in the area. She retired in her late 70s, when she became blind.

She had enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and reading and was a member of Park United Methodist Church, Pulaski.

Born Oct. 18, 1907, in the town of Antwerp, daughter of William J.V. and Mary Alzora Bargy Remington, she attended country schools in the Lorraine area.

She married Howard E. Laveck on June 11, 1934, in Wesleyville, Pa., with Justice Walter E. Goodwin officiating.

Surviving besides her daughter are a son, Gregg E. Warren, Bunnell, Fla.; two grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Three brothers, George A., Harold E. and Samuel E. Remington, died previously.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Summerville Funeral Home with the Rev. Catherine Salisbury officiating, pastor emeritus of Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Eva E. Guyette, 87, of Sandy Creek, passed away Wednesday at Pontiac Nursing Home in Oswego. Born November 6, 1925 in Ellisburg, N.Y., she was the daughter of Alan and Ella DeLano England. A marriage to Abram Allen Jr. ended in divorce. Her second marriage was to Paul Guyette who died in 1991. She lived in Mannsville, moving to Sandy Creek in 1958. She was employed at Northland Electric in Watertown until retiring in 1989.

Survived by a son Abram Allen III and his wife Rae of Sandy Creek, two daughters; Carolyn Briggs of Syracuse and Isabelle Dodamead of Auburn; 14 grandchildren, two brothers; David England of Watertown, Stanley England of Mannsville, and a sister Isabelle Eastman of Watertown. Predeceased by a son Dell Allen and 15 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held 3 P.M. Sunday at Summerville Funeral Home in Sandy Creek with Rev. Wayne Grow officiating. Spring burial in North Watertown Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday 1 to 3 P.M. prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

She married Carlton R. Steele April 28, 1945, in Fulton.

The couple had resided in Richland since 1947. Mr. Steele is a native of Black River and an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. and Mrs. Ridgeway owned and operated a dairy farm on the Lacona-Orwell Road until their retirement in 1975.

Mrs. Ridgeway attended the United Methodist Church, Sandy Creek, and was a 60-year member of Sandy Creek Grange 127. She was a 48-year member and past noble grand of Mistletoe Rebekah Lodge 248 and past district deputy president of Oswego County District 2 of Rebekahs. She also held several offices with the Past Noble Grands Association.

Hilton, 54, of RD 4, died Thursday afternoon at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse. She was born in Richland, a daughter of Edward and Hattie Bowers Martin. She attended Richland and Pulaski schools. She married Edward A. Hilton in 1946 at Richland. They lived in Richland until 1962 when they moved to their present home in Fulton. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Joyce) Carr of Fulton; three sons, James E. of Altmar, John P. of Rome, and Edward M. of Mexico; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Weed of Caughdenoy, and Mrs. Gladys Stevens of Richland; four brothers, William and Harry Martin of Richland, Edward of Caughdenoy and Robert of Richland, and 10 grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski, the Rev. Dolen Morris officiating. Spring burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Orwell. 9845 Evelyn G. Preske, 87, of Watson Rd., North Syracuse, NY, died Monday in the Rosewood, Syracuse, NY. Born in Richland, NY, she was the daughter of the late James and Helen (Ryder) MacBride. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Survived by two daughters, Diane (Bryan) Hills of Jamesville, NY, Kathleen (Richard) Lancy of Mexico, NY; and one son, Timothy (Susan) Preske of Camillus, NY; one sister, Ethel Kellogg of Camillus, NY; and two brothers, James N. MacBride of Rochester, NY, Robert MacBride of East Syracuse, NY; two grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband, John J. Preske; one daughter, Marilyn Preske; one sister, Lillian Kellogg. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sears - Middleton - Jones Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, 209 North Main Street (Rt 11), North Syracuse. Interment will be Wednesday in St. Francis Cemetery, Marcellus.

9846 Evelyn J. Pool 84, formerly of the Williamstown and Redfield area passed away Friday, August 11, 2017 at the Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, NY where she had been a resident since December 2014. She was born January 20, 1933 in Kasoag, NY, a daughter of Alfred & Flora Seamans Kinney and was a lifelong resident of the area. On September 13, 1952 she married Horace ‘Ted’ Pool in Camden, NY. He passed away May 1, 2015.

Surviving are six daughters, Linda & Wayne Cough, Richland, Debra Bolster, Williamstown, Paula & Spike Trudell, Williamstown, Suzette Riding, Morristown, TN, Pamela & Jerrod Bacon, Redfield, Bridget & Bob LaSalle, Watertown, two sons, Jeffrey & Joyce Pool, Williamstown, Scott & Betty Pool, Camden, 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, two great, great granddaughters, two sisters, Reba Keeney, Mexico, Jean Blumer, North Syracuse, 1 brother, Alfred & Jean Kinney,Jr, Westdale, NY and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Martin, Pauline Dunn and a brother, William Kinney.

Evelyn Janet Darling, Fulton, a native of Pulaski, died Wednesday at Lee Memorial Hospital, Fulton.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski, with the Rev. Elizabeth Mowry officiating. Spring burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Surviving are two sons, Randy, Lee Center, and Ronny, Norfolk, Va.; two daughters, Carolyn Wolfe, Mount Airey, N.C., and Bonnie Breezee, Fulton; two brothers, Matthew Brown, Clay, and Robert Brown, Sackets Harbor; three sisters, Lois Tanner, Altmar, Ana Mattacherio, Albany, and Marion Greene, Schenectady; 14 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Anson had been employed at General Electric in Syracuse and also at Walker's Dry Cleaners of Pulaski for several years. Mr. Anson worked for the Regal Paper Company and later for Douglaston Manor Farms, until his retirement in 1959. The couple moved to Pennellville in 1967. Mr. Anson died in January 1969, at age 72.

Evelyn L. Sullivan Perry, 86, Parish, formerly of Potsdam, died Thursday at Iroquois Nursing Home, Jamesville.

Mrs. Perry began her career as a registered nurse at Potsdam Hospital, where she was head nurse of the first floor. In March 1948, she was appointed public health nurse in Massena and was one of the original eight public health nurses of Oswego County.

She was a communicant of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Parish, and a member of the Hastings-Parish Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

Born Sept. 3, 1918, in Potsdam, daughter of William and Laura Sullivan, she was a graduate of Potsdam High School and A. Barton Hepburn School of Nursing, Ogdensburg, in the class of 1940. She enlisted in the Army Nurses Corps during World War II and served as a second lieutenant in the European theater for 15 months. Upon her return home, she attended Syracuse University, where she majored in public health nursing and graduated Aug. 23, 1947.

She married Joseph H. Perry on Sept. 1, 1947, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Potsdam. Mr. Perry died in 1989.

Surviving are three sons, Joseph, Cecelia, Ky., Michael, Paducah, Ky., and David, Parish; three daughters, Barbara Olney, Bowling Green, Ky., Elizabeth Pidkaminy, Parish, and Peggy Parshley, Elizabethtown, Ky.; a sister, Catherine White, Potsdam, 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. today in St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Lawn Cemetery.
