    • John H. Denny, 85, died Thursday, December 20th, in Oswego, after a long illness. Son of Joseph and Jessie Phillips Denny, John was a lifelong Oswego resident. He graduated from Oswego High School in 1945, a standout participant in both football and baseball. He then proudly served in the US Army until 1948, returning to Oswego where he married his devoted wife of 63 years, Catherine Ann Hersog in 1949. He was employed at Castrogiovanni Grocery Store and Johnson Market before making a career at Metropolitan Life Insurance, where he worked for more than 20 years. He spent the remaining years of his career as a building engineer at St. Luke's Nursing Facility until retirement in 1987. John's passion for sports continued throughout his life. An avid fan, he rooted for the Detroit Tigers, Army Football and West Virginia University athletics. He served as the president of the booster clubs for both Oswego High School and Oswego Catholic High School, receiving recognition from both organizations for his commitment and services. John's Catholic faith was also important to him. He served on numerous committees with St. Mary's parish and with the Syracuse Diocese. He was a Fourth Degree member and past Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus in Oswego. Family was a great source of pride for him. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, story-telling, and willingness to serve. John, was pre-deceased by his parents, step-mother, Violet Denny, and by his two brothers, Joseph and George Denny. He was also predeceased by step-brother, George Desacia, and step-sisters Edith Freeden and Hazel Gilbert. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Kay, sister, Mary Ferris, and children: John (Denise) Denny, Jessica (Howard) Ormsby, Jean Denny Scardella and Joseph (Anne) Denny. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren: Sean Ormsby, Susan (Ryan) McMahon, Thomas Scardella, Chris (Ariel) Denny, Kathleen Denny, Captain Brian Scardella, Lisa (Jonathan) Nemargut. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Church in Oswego. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to St Mary's Church, or your charity of choice.
