Doris L. Matthews, 87, Dies; Funeral May 4
CLAYTON -- Doris L. Matthews, 87, formerly of Clayton-Depauville Road, widow of Ralph Matthews, died Sunday morning at Edward John Noble Hospital-Samaritan Extended Care Facility, Alexandria Bay, where she had been a patient since Jan. 26.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. May 4 in Depauville Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph DeGroote, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Depauville Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with T. R. Jetty Funeral Home. Donations may be made to the Depauville Methodist Church or the Clayton Fire Department.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Gordon (Phyllis) Cerow, Jr., Clayton; a son, Stewart Getman, Oklahoma; two stepdaughters, Ellen Walker, Pennsylvania, and Elaine Welch, Rochester; a stepson, George Matthews, Syracuse; three sisters, Margaret Daily and Lois Getman, both of Clayton, and Mrs. Roger (Pauline) Walti (sic) , LaFargeville; a stepsister, Sharon Connell, LaFargeville; a stepbrother, Eugene Van Alstyne, LaFargeville; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Born Nov. 5, 1908, in the town of Clayton, daughter of Stewart and Ella Haller Van Alstyne, she attended are schools and married Stephen Michael Getman on Nov. 30, 1927, in the parsonage of LaFargeville Methodist Church with the Rev. Ivan J. Howland, then pastor, officiating. Mr. Getman died July 23, 1964.
She married Ralph Matthews in 1969. Mr. Matthews, assessor for the town of Clayton, and a Republican committeeman for 12 years, died June 21, 1988.
Mrs. Matthews was a member of Depauville Methodist Church and the Home Bureau. She did arts and crafts for many years.
