- Roger F. Gareau of Brushton, New York, passed away at home unexpectedly on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015.
Born on Aug. 23, 1936, Roger was the son of the former Elmer and Alice Gareau (Bombard). He grew up in Malone, New York, and spent much time on his grandparent’s farm in North Bangor, where he would help with the milking and chores before the start of the school day. Having taken his junior and senior years concurrently, he graduated from Franklin Academy at the age of 16. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.
On Nov. 12, 1955, he was united in marriage to June M. Villnave at St. John Bosco Church in Malone by Father Stone. His wife survives.
Roger was employed for 32 years by the New York State Power Authority in Massena, New York, as a senior operator and retired in 1991. He was also a licensed realtor.
Roger was a life member of the BEST Hunting Club, a regular bowler in the Monday and Thursday night leagues in Moira, New York, as well as a member of the Malone Golf Club, where he was fortunate enough to get his first ‘hole in one’. Roger was the Moria town assessor in the 1970s and town councilman for eight years;, he served on the Brushton-Moira School Board of Education for 11 years, both as a member and as a president; and for over 25 years volunteered at the Brushton Food Pantry. Roger also enjoyed spending his weekday mornings at the La Page Stables, pampering the horses and getting them ready to race.
Roger is also survived by his son, Brian R, Gareau and his wife, Particia, of Edwards, Illinois; his daughter, Jennifer A. Yando and her husband, Dean, of Malone; three grandchildren, Brandi Clark and husband Jeff, Benjamin Gareau and wife Stephanie and Kelsey Gareau, all from Illinois; and three great-grandchildren, Evan, Reagan and Camden. He is also survived by two sisters, Marilyn Tatro of Constable, New York, and Barbara Bonville of Whippleville, New York; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Brushton, New York, with a celebration of Roger’s life to follow at the Brushton United Methodist Church, serving dessert, his favorite meal. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to either the Brushton-Moira Fire and Rescue Squad or the Brushton Food Pantry. The family also asks that you please remember Roger by the life he led in his generosity of self by practicing a random act of kindness to someone you know, someone in need, or a complete stranger. Roger lived selflessly and would wish for us all to ‘pay it forward’.
Arrangements are through the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Service Inc. of Malone, New York.
