  • Notes
    • Mrs. Justine Bowen Mere, aged 43, died, at her home in Massena Wednesday (10/22/1919) as the result of injuries received Tuesday evening when she was struck hy an automobile and thrown to the pavement, fracturing her skull.

Mr. and Mrs. Mere had attended the wedding of their niece, Miss Anna Mere, at Saered Heart church at 8 o'clock. They came out of the church after the ceremony and passed between two automobiles which were waiting in front of the church, to cross the street to the car which was to take them home. As they started out from behind the car, another car driven by Edward Whalen of Massena came down Main Street and she started to run across the street ahead of the car. Mr. Mere tried to stop her but failed to reach her arm to hold her back and she ran directly in front of the car. She was struck by the fender, but Mr. Whalen managed to stop the car before running over her.
