    • Virgil L. Monson, 80, Lancaster, KS, passed away Friday, March 11, 2011 at the Atchison Hospital with his loving family by his side.

      Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Peter Rupprecht, St. John's Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Lancaster Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held at 6:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home with visitation to follow until 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of the funeral home.       Virgil was born January 4, 1931 in Atchison, KS the son of Daniel and Grace (Weber) Monson. He attended Stoney Point School north of Muscotah and would always have fun with his grandchildren telling them he attended The University of Muscotah, along with various other tall tales. Virgil served his country proudly in the United States Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a Supervisor in the Melting Department at the former Atchison Casting. Virgil enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, camping, mushroom hunting and spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan and kept up regularly with KU Basketball, K-State Football, Royals Baseball and the Chiefs. Virgil was a charter member of the Lancaster Lions Club, member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was the Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge #158 of Atchison.

      Virgil married Lois Grunert on October 14, 1953 at the St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Atchison. She survives of the home in Lancaster. Additional survivors include sons, John (Mary Lynn) Monson, Atchison; Greg (Brandy) Monson, Meriden, KS; daughters, Cindy (Stan) Drimmel, Lancaster, KS; Sandy (Randy) Cormode, Atchison; brothers, Kenneth Monson, Bonita, CA; Curtis Monson, Hiawatha, KS; John ‘Jack' Monson, Florida; Dale Monson, Horton, KS; sister, Judy Cooper, Horton, KS; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

      Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Daniel and Stan Monson; sisters, Maxine Hisle and Joyce Cheek and a granddaughter, Beth Monson.
