    • Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, January 9, 1890 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Three and one-half miles southeast of Sioux Falls, at the residence of his brother, W. S. Ferguson, at 12:45 o'clock, J. E. Ferguson, aged 32 years, 11 months and 16 days. The deceased was born in Oswego County, New York, and would have been 33 years old on the 8th day of next October. That such a young man of great natural talent should have been cut off so early in his career seems sad indeed. He received his early education in New York in the common schools and came to Dakota some fifteen years ago, when for nearly four years he clerked in the general merchandise store of C. K. Howard, becoming acquainted with many of the old settlers. After that through New York influence he received quite a lucrative position in the Interior Department, which he held some seven years, extending some fifteen months into the Cleveland administration. During all this time he was preparing himself for a newspaper writer, for which he had certainly great talent. His writings were of a humorous vein and he possessed great ingenuity in the placing of words so as to give them striking poetical rhythm. He was corresponded for many years of leading papers of the country in a more or less degree. He was taken with hemorrhage in Brooklyn, New York, some six months ago and since that time has rapidly failed but his physicians thought he was quite sure to live until spring. For this reason his wife, who occupies a government position in Washington, has not left her home there to attend him, with her other duties having two children take care of. His writings, which together with make a volume, have been mostly under the name of "Jef Joslyn." "Jef' were his own initials and "Joslyn" his mother's name.
