  • Notes
    • October 21, 1892 ~ Charles E. Mahaffy, age 31 years, 6 months, Railroad conductor, born in Oswego County, New York, Son of Samuel Mahaffy, died in Pulaski of an injury to the head, concussion with compression of the brain.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, October 27, 1892 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Death from a Railroad Accident - The sad and startling news reached Pulaski on Wednesday morning of last week, that a railroad accident had occurred at Taberg on the Rome road, and that Charles E. Mahaffy, of this village had sustained injuries from which he was not expected to recover. Dr. Caldwell went immediately to the scene of the accident. The injured man was found to be unconscious, suffering from several injuries, but chiefly from a blow on the head, causing concussion of the brain. He was brought to his home on Lake street, in this village, on Friday. He never recovered consciousness after the accident, but died October 21st. It appears that Conductor Mahaffy's train was on a switch at the Taberg station. The rear did not clear the switch and he signaled with his lantern for the engineer to move on and allow the passenger train, which was behind, to pass along on the main line. The engineer on the passenger train, supposing that the signal was intended for him, pulled the lever and came on at good speed. The switch was still open and thus the accident occurred, as Mr. Mahaffy was standing on the track just behind his train. We do not learn that any blame is attached to the engineer in question, and his great grief at the outcome is too apparent to be doubted for a moment. Deceased was born in Sandy Creek. His father died in the army, and from earliest childhood, Charles Mahaffy was brought up in Pulaski in the family of S. Mahaffy, now deceased. He was regarded as an own brother by the sons of his uncle. He had been engaged in railroading for the past five years. He had been married and a loving, devoted wife, a daughter, aged 11, and a son, aged 5, survive and sincerely mourn his untimely death. The funeral was held on Sunday and conducted by Revds. Bramley and Paul. There was an immense audience of friends and acquaintances present; about forty employees of the railroad company came to Pulaski on a special train. The members of Ringgold Fire Company, of which organization he was a member, attended the funeral in a body. Interment took place in Pulaski cemetery. All unite in sympathy for the wife and little children, thus suddenly bereft of husband and father.
