- Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, February 15, 1877 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Casket - Maltby - At the residence of his parents, and Pulaski, February 6th, 1877, of consumption, Bernice D. Maltby, aged 23 years. The sympathy of this community has been especially drawn out toward the parents of the deceased by this event, and the loss of an only son and toward the young wife left behind with an infant child in her arms. To the parents, the feeling of loss is intensified by the remembrance of a devoted, _ love and helpfulness constantly manifested toward them, and on which they were relying as their dependence in old age. But the deceased has left behind the strongest possible consolation by which to sooth the sorrows of desolated parental hearts in the evidence he has given that he had made his peace with God, and that death to him is gain, eternal gain, though present lost to them. His Bible was his constant companion, especially in the last months of his sickness, and in periods of intense pain and suffering, he was accustomed to say that he found his only but sure relief and prayer. He spoke often of his wish that he were able to appeal to his young friends and associates to seek the Savior and make full preparation for death in the hour of health and strength; assuring them that they would not make that preparation too soon, nor love their Savior too much, nor serve him too long or too well. May it be said that "being dead" he yet speaketh.
