    • Collins was born in Steuben, Oneida County, New York. He is only seen in the records with his parents in the July 1860 census there, listed as an infant of 1 month in age. IN 1870 he is found in Redfield with his maternal grandparents, and in 1880 with his maternal Uncle Nelson Smith. Nelson Smith lives with Collins in the 1900 census.
      It is speculated that Collins father may have been injured in the Civil War, and he went to live with his grandparents while the mother worked. The parents are in the 1880 census for Steuben.
