- Huludia Anne Tilton was born to poverty and a life of sorrows. One of the youngest of a family of 8 (several still unknown, presumed died young) Huludia married her neighbor Darius Ballou in about 1859. To the couple was born one child, a son Darius Lamar, who was variously known otherwise as "Ethelbert" "Elias" and most commonly Lyde.
In 1865 Huludia is listed as owning her own land and having her brother Levi and wife, also her mother in the house. In 1870 she is remarried to her cousin, Silas Tilton Richardson, yet still listed as owner of the property. In 1875 she and Silas also had Wm. & Louisa White and their family living with them in their home. (Interestingly, the Whites's were Great-Great-Grandparents of Lyndon Walker!) At some point after the desertion of Silas Richardson, Huludia used her maiden name for a time, variously with her 1st wedded name of Ballou. Her movements in the area were many, she served as a housekeeper for various folks. In 1892 she is found caring for her aged mother in the census. In 1905 she is living with Joseph Owens as a housekeeper. She died very poor in 1909 and is buried in Maplelawn Cemetery in Dugway in an undetermined grave.
In 1882 when Darius Ballou married Oneota Smith of the same neighborhood, Oneota Smith's mother the very proper Elizabeth Alina Henry Smith of Lexington, Kentucky very much disapproved. This disapproval of Huludia and her family was passed down as legend. Irma Ballou Hazelton Hall (1904-98) remembered her grandmother "Tilton" very vaguely. Irma recalled a visit in the middle of the night with her father to get something for a toothache from Huludia. It was Irma who through her sister Teddy, passed on to this writer the few remaining Tilton Heirlooms of note: A glass Luddens Cough drops Log Cabin Candy dish; a brown glass saddle like tooth Pick holder, and more importantly, the Tilton Family Bible. Sue Bass Hazelton has an old glass photo passed on to her through Maureen Ballou Joralemon of a family of 5 in which the father is presumed to be Alexander Tilton (by the identical likeness to his son Levi, of whom photos exist) It is thought the youngest child in this photo to be Huludia. (The photo is of the type produced in Oswego City by the early photographer Barnard, who took the famed "first news photo" in the 1840s of the flour mill fire) Otherwise, no other photos survive to portray our troubled, yet hard working grandmother.
