Newspaper Article - Thursday, June 5, 1879 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Richland - On Tuesday the 27th friends of Mrs. H. Mellen gave her a surprise visit in honor of her 90th birthday. Among the guests present were Mr. Russell Calkins, aged 81; Mrs. R. Calkins, 78; Mrs. Campbell, 77; Mrs. D. Ames, 72; Mrs. B. Ripsom, 72; Mrs. Brown, 68. After partaking of a bountiful repast, some appropriate remarks were made by the pastor C. E. Wells, followed by a short prayer and the singing a song by several members of the Potter family. All passed off agreeably to the wishes of all present.
Newspaper Obituary - December 20, 1888 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died in Richland, December 15, 1888 Alice Mellen, aged 90 years, 6 months and 18 days. Mrs. Mellen, the oldest person in this section of the State, was mother of H. H. Mellen, for many years station agent at that place. The Democrat would be pleased to publish a short sketch of the life of this aged lady provided it can be furnished by someone of her friends of relatives.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, December 20, 1888 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Richland - Mrs. Alice H. Mellen departed this life Saturday, at 2 o'clock a.m., after a long and useful life, aged 99 years, 7 months, 17 days. She was one of the first settlers in Richland when it was a wilderness. Sumner Mellen, wife and brother, Grant of Black River, were present at the funeral which was held at the Disciple Church Sunday at 2 p.m., services conducted by Rev. Douglas of Pulaski.
