    • Born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, John was one of the six children of John & Deborah (Studley) Erskine. He married the former Phebe Robinson, daughter of John & Phebe (Clapp) Robinson in Windham County, Vermont. Phebe was born in 1762 and died in 1858 in Richland Twp., Oswego County, New York. Some time after their marriage the couple settled in the Winchester region of New Hampshire.
      John first enlisted in the Massachusetts Militia in June 1775 from Winchester, New Hampshire. He was assigned to serve in Captain Oliver Capron’s Company, Colonel Doolittle’s Regiment. Other officers over him included Lieutenant Barry and Sergeant Ingells. He was immediately involved in the defense of the harbor at New London, Connecticut for three and a half months.
      In mid-1776 John was drafted from Winchester, New Hampshire. He served in the New Hampshire Militia regiment commanded by Colonel Ashley. This Regiment was headed towards the defense of Ft. Ticonderoga in New York, when on the way at Rutland, Vermont John was discharged and allowed to return home. John reenlisted at Winchester again in December 1776 serving for three months. He was at Swanzy, New Hampshire in Captain Towne’s Company, under 2nd Lieutenant Nehemiah Hutton and Ensign Hutchens in the Regiment commanded by Colonel David Gilman. John went with his regiment from Winchester to Peekskill, New York where he was stationed the remainder of this enlistment. In his pension application he recalled that General McDougal was in command there.
      John filed his pension application on 6 June 1832 from Winchester, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. He listed his service particulars in a sworn affidavit on 7 June 1832. The application was later approved and Erskine was awarded $24.99 per year going back to 4 March 1831.
      On 11 March 1844 Phebe reported her husband’s death and reapplied to receive a widow’s pension. There is no record of the delay in action, but on 18 May 1848 Phebe Erskine was awarded the same amount John had received for her life under the guidelines of the Congressional Act of 2 February 1848.
      On 5 April 1855 Phebe filled out another form reaffirming her status and applying for bounty land. She was awarded 160 acres but it is not specified where this was located. Phebe submitted pages from the family bible at this time to prove her marriage date and the births of several of the children.
      It is interesting to note that John is listed as "Lt. John Erskine” on 10 of the first 11 children’s birth records. No confirmation of this rank has yet been located.
