Newspaper Obituary - Friday, August 25, 1939 Oswego Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - John C. Erskine Dead At Pulaski ¬Veteran Railroad Man, 90, Had Been In Failing Health Since Spring - Pulaski, August 25 - John C. Erskine, 90, veteran railroad man, and one of the oldest residents of Pulaski, died Thursday evening at his home in North street. Mr. Erskine had been in failing health since last spring, but had only been confined to his bed for about a month. He was born in Holmesville, now Fernwood, April 18, 1849, having celebrated his 90th birthday last spring. He was the son of John and Clara Simmonds Erskine, who were among original settlers of the Fernwood section. He spent his early years on the farm, helping his father clear the timber from the place. The old Erskine homestead as it was known remained in the family until its sale this spring. After a period of farm life he went to work for the old R. W. & O. railroad and was in railroad employ for more than 50 years, retiring about 20 years ago. He was a construction foreman on bridge work in the old days when stone foundations were the style, and he was in charge of the stone work on many of the bridges in northern New York. Since his retirement he had lived at home except for several visits a week to the old home at Fernwood which he helped his sisters maintain. He preserved his faculties wonderfully for a man of his age. He was an attendant of the Methodist church and was an honorary member of the R. W. & O. Pioneers. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ann Vorce of Mexico and Miss Carrie Erskine of Fernwood; one son, Walter A. Erskine of Washington, D. C. and one daughter, Miss Lulu B. Erskine of Pulaski. Funeral arrangements are not complete.
