- Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 15, 1859 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Suicide - Mr. Obadiah Mattison, a worthy and respected citizen of this town (Mexico) committed suicide, on Wednesday the 7th inst., by hanging himself. He was living with his son, Cyrus Mattison, and for 2 or 3 years past, since the death of his wife, he has been in a gloomy state of mind, and on the afternoon of Wednesday, being alone in his room, he adjusted a comforter to hook in the wall, and sitting in his chair fastened it about the neck, then with one arm resting on his chair, he slipped out and bearing his own weight on the cloth he choked himself to death with his knees touching the floor. The determined manner in which he killed himself shows plainly that his object had been long in view. No reason can be assigned for the dreadful act.
