Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, May 8, 1901 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Charles A. Clark - In the death of Mr. Charles A. Clark, which occurred Sunday morning, our village loses one of its best known residents. Mr. Clark has been poorly for some weeks and for the past week his condition has been such as to dispel all hope of his recovery. The story of his life is summed up in the following facts: Charles A. Clark was born in Unadilla, Otsego County, in July, 1823, and would've been 78 years of age, had he lived until July next. His boyhood days were passed in Unadilla. Leaving that place he located in Mexico, Oswego County, in 1845, where he remained until 1841, when he came to Pulaski and entered the employ of Jones & Clark as a clerk in their general store. He went to California twice during the gold finding period; the first time going through Mexico and the second time he crossed the Isthmus. After his return from California, with his brother, James A. Clark, the firm of James A. Clark & Company was formed, who conducted a general store. A few years later the firm of Clark Brothers was formed. It consisted of James A. Clark and Charles A. Clark. The firm erected a stone building in Jefferson avenue on the site now occupied by the Pulaski House. Here he remained for several years. The business was sold to Sherman and Cyrus Clark. In 1862 James A. and Charles A. Clark engaged in the banking business. Three years after, they organized the Pulaski National Bank. The subject of this sketch served as president of the bank until 1884, when he resigned his position and retired from the banking business. Since that time he has led a retired life. During active life Mr. Clark was very successful and was one of the best business man of his day. He is survived by a son, Charles K. Clark, of this village, also two brothers, and four sisters, Henry B. Clark, of Pulaski; Cyrus Clark, of Oneida; Mrs. John Crawford, of Oneida; Mrs. W. Brainard Dixson, Mrs. S. V. Bentley and Mrs. Elizabeth McCarty, of Pulaski. His wife died in 1882. The funeral will occur this afternoon at two o'clock.
