    • October 26, 1912 ~ Royal Newton Whitney, age 75 years, 17 days, Married, Farmer, born in Wellwood, New York, Son of Hezekiah Whitney born in Vermont, and Miranda Fuller born in Vermont, Died in Richland Township of strangulation by hanging self with rope with suicidal intent.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, October 30, 1912 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Death of Royal N. Whitney - An Esteemed Citizen Passes Away - Saturday afternoon the said and startling news came that Royal N. Whitney, fifty years a resident of this town and a prosperous farmer living about two miles east of the village, on the Centerville Road, had taken his life. For some time Mr. Whitney had been in failing health and that had depressed his mind but no suspicion was entertained that he had suicidal intentions. He left the house about three o'clock and went to the barn. Soon after, his stepson, Hugh F. Whitney, who with Mrs. Whitney had been awaited dinner, drove to the barn and on entering was shocked to find his father near one of the stalls, limp in death, with a rope about his neck. He had put the rope under his chin and fallen so as to bring his weight on the rope and death resulted. The fact that his heart had been bad inclined to the doctor to the belief that his heart ceased action so suddenly there was no struggle. Mr. Whitney was born in Wellwood, this county, seventy-five years ago this month. He came to this town about fifty years ago and located on the farm where he died. He was a prosperous farmer and a citizen who merited and held the highest esteem of the community. He was twice married and is survived by the second wife. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Napoleon Potter, who resided near the Whitney home. The family at home included the stepson, Hugh F. Whitney and wife. Mr. Whitney was a member of Pulaski Methodist church and for many years was an earnest class leader. His Christian character was as clear as a life of rectitude could make it. He was a member of Pulaski Grange and in both church and Grange his counsel was always sought and his convictions respected. The funeral was held from the late home yesterday, at one o'clock, Rev. A. P. Palmer officiating
