George R. Failing, 99, Westernport, passed away with his family at his side on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in Cumberland.
He was born Jan. 17, 1915, in Luke. George was the son of the late Henry Oran and Ada Reed Failing. George was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Chabot Failing, on Sept. 23, 1992, and his sister, Frances Failing Rapley.
George graduated in 1932 from the Greenbrier Military Academy and in 1936 from Duke University with an A.B. Degree. In the early years, he was an accountant with Price Waterhouse and Talon Zipper Company. From 1942 until 1946, he served as a full Lieutenant for the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from Westvaco as an accountant. Proudly, he was one of the original founders of cable television in the Tri Towns and Frostburg. He provided income tax service in the Tri Towns for more than three decades and served as the treasurer of the Green Glade Club at Deep Creek Lake for 34 years. He was a member of the Masons, the Ali Ghan Shriners, and the Trinity United Methodist Church. Also, he was a member of the American Legion Victory Post 155, Westernport, and a life member of the Kelly Mansfield Post 52 of Piedmont, W.Va.
George is survived by his two children, G. Reed Failing Jr., MD (Barbara E. Maxwell) of Cumberland; and Ann C. Failing of Westernport, with whom he resided; two grandchildren, Anne E. Failing of Colorado and John R. Failing of California.
Friends will be received at the Fredlock Funeral Home located at 31 Jones Street in Piedmont, W.Va., on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, from 10 a.m. to noon, at which time a service will be conducted with the Rev. Steve Grimes officiating.
Interment will be held privately at a later date at the Philos Cemetery, Westernport.
