Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, January 26, 1950 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Fred Smith, 83, Dies at Richland - Last rites were held for Fred C. Smith, 83, former construction foreman, from his home in Richland, Sunday, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Ray Williams of Pennellville officiating. Interment was made in Richland cemetery. His death occurred Thursday at his home, following a long illness. Bearers included Charles Obleman, Raymond VanBuren, Richard Widrig, and Peter Pawlus, all of Richland. He is survived by one son, Clark Smith, of China Lake, California, two daughters, Mrs. Cecile OBrien, Richland, and Mrs. Rdell Brennan of 319 Gifford Street, Syracuse; six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Mr. Smith was born in Woodville, March 17, 1867, a son of Fernando and Rebecca Fillmore Smith. When about 9 years old, he moved to Richland with his parents and has resided at his late home nearly 64 years. He was married to Nancy Smith on February 23, 1892 at Mexico. Mrs. Smith died at the age of 77 years on November 24, 1942. Mr. Smith was for many years superintendent on construction work, being employed on the first dam on the Salmon River, at what was known as Stillwater. After that he was with the F. R. Jones Construction Company, of Chicago, Illinois, for a while, and also was employed by the Mansfield Sheet and Tin Plate Mills; Ford Motor company, Hamilton, Ohio; subway at Cincinnati, Ohio and many other construction jobs. Mr. Smith had been in failing health the past year and confined to his bed the past three months. Since his retirement he operated his small farm just outside Richland.
