    • An Orwell man was killed late Saturday night when his car went off State Route 3 in the Town of Richland and struck a tree, State Police in Pulaski reported Sunday.

Richard H. Ward, 23, of Lacona RD 1, was pronounced dead at Oswego Hospital shortly after the 10:25 p.m. accident, troopers said.

Ward was driving north alone at an apparent high rate of speed, according to state police, when his vehicle ran off the road, and sideswiped a tree, just north of Atkinson Road, police said.

Investigator Jack Doyle was probing the cause of the accident.

Ward's death is the 12th motor vehicle fatality in Oswego County for 1979, troopers said.

He was born in Oswego to Marvin and Eva Graham Ward. He attended Sandy Creek High School and was employed by Fulton Boiler Works of Pulaski.

He is survived besides his father and mother by four brothers, Douglas Henry, Marvin Ward Jr., Robert Ward and John Ward, all of Orwell; five sisters, Miss Carol Henry of Orwell, Mrs. Sally Nunez of Massena, Cindy Polic of Lakeland, Fla., Vicky Walker of Williamstown and Candy Ward of Orwell; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Hannah Ward of Pulaski.
