      MUNNSVILLE - Harold E. Thurston, 82, of 5256 Park St., Munnsville, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 28, 2007, at his home, with his loving family at his side.

      He was born on Nov. 14, 1924 in Stockbridge, the son of Irving and Flossie Trew Thurston.

      Harold spent his early years in the Munnsville area, later living in Whitelaw and moving back to Munnsville in 1964. He was a graduate of Stockbridge Valley High School.

      He worked for Oneida Ltd. in Sherrill for 30 years, retiring in 1987.

      Harold was a member and a former deacon of the Morrisville Community Church. He was also a member of the Munnsville Volunteer Fire Department for over 35 years and a member of the Madison County Fire Police and the Stockbridge Ruritans.

      He was a World War II veteran, serving overseas with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Wedderburn.

      Harold was an avid bowler and enjoyed birds and gardening. He loved spending time with his family and attending all of his grandchildren's activities.

      He was united in marriage to Lois A. Walters on July 24, 1948 at the Whitelaw Presbyterian Church. They had recently celebrated 59 years of marriage.

      Surviving besides his wife, Lois, are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Harold E. Thurston Jr., of East Weymouth, Mass., and Darrell and Kristi Thurston of Sherrill; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Richard Turrell of North Norwich, and Shelia and David Bartlett of Munnsville; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Clinton and Ruth Thurston of Canastota, Gene and Grace Thurston of Allegany, N.Y., and Maebelle Thurston of Munnsville; 12 grandchildren, Jessica Thurston, Kelly Thurston, Michael Thurston, Matthew Thurston, James Turrell, Lauren Turrell, Nathan Turrell, Gabrielle Bartlett, Dru Bartlett, Louisa Bartlett, Connor Bartlett and Devin Bartlett; and several nieces and nephews.

      Harold was predeceased by two brothers, Herman Thurston and Merton Thurston.

      Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., Canastota. The Rev. Russell S. Duncan, pastor of the Morrisville Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held Friday (tomorrow) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home, 201 James Street, Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to Morrisville Community Church, PO Box 178, Morrisville, NY 13408, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
