- MUNNSVILLE - Merton A. Thurston, 83, of 6231 Haslauer Road, Munnsville, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 at the Oneida Healthcare Center, following a brief illness.
He was born on Oct. 17, 1920, in Munnsville, the son of Irving M. and Flossie Trew Thurston.
Merton had lived in the Munnsville area all his life, and was a 1941 graduate of Munnsville High School.
He had worked as maintenance foreman for the New York State Department of Transportation in Oneida for 33 years, retiring in 1979.
Merton was a veteran of World War II, serving overseas with the Army Air Force.
He was a member of the Stockbridge United Methodist Church.
Merton enjoyed carpentry, camping and fishing.
He married Maebelle Priest on May 11, 1957 in Hamilton.
Surviving, besides his wife, are: one son, Melvin A. Thurston of Munnsville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Clinton and Ruth Thurston of Canastota, Harold and Lois Thurston of Munnsville, and Gene and Grace Thurston of Olean; and several nieces and nephews. Merton was predeceased by a brother, Herman Thurston.
Funeral services for Merton A. Thurston, 83, of Munnsville will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 at the Ball Funeral Home, Munnsville.
The Rev. Mary E. Morris, of the Stockbridge United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in Stockbridge Cemetery, Munnsville. Calling hours will be held Sunday (tomorrow), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home, 5327 N. Main St., Munnsville
