David N. Patrick followed his father's footsteps into Carpenters Local 747. He worked hard and learned quickly.

Patrick, 30, of county Route 29, Lycoming, Oswego County, was also a husband and father. He was killed in a one-car accident on county Route 1A Thursday.

"He was real proud of his family," said Charles Rinoldo, a business representative for the union. Rinoldo said Patrick had taken jobs as far away as Delaware and Glens Falls to help support his wife, Kimberly, and son, Ryan, and daughter, Reilly. "He was just thrilled. He definitely turned the corner from young kid to family man."

Oswego County sheriff's investigators are trying to find out what caused the crash around 2:20 a.m. Deputies said Patrick's car went off the right side of the road east of Cliff Road and hit a guardrail. His car then went across the roadway and across the lawn of a private residence before hitting a wooden well house and overturning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Sharon Whipple said unsafe speed was a contributing factor but she had no other information.

Patrick's father, Richard Patrick, also had been in the Carpenters Local 747, Rinoldo said. When David Patrick joined about eight years ago as an apprentice, Rinoldo was his mentor. Patrick became a journeyman about four years ago, Rinoldo said.

"Dave was the kind of guy who liked to be around people," Rinoldo said. "I know he enjoyed his work. He liked being around the guys.

"It's a definite loss to the family and a definite loss to Carpenters Local 747. He was an asset, and a loss to the contractors in the area who could have employed him."

Patrick was born in Oswego and is a graduate of Oswego High School and Mohawk Valley Community College. He enjoyed riding his snowmobile and jet ski, Rinoldo said.
