    • Alvin B. Thurston, 78 of 3798 Sconondoa Road Oneida. died Sunday afternoon March 22, 2009 in St. Elizabeth's Hospital Utica where he had been a surgical patient following an illness of the last couple of months.
      He was born on July 22, 1930 in the town of Fenner the son of Harry and Katherine Burleson Thurston. A lifelong resident of the area he was educated in the Peterboro and Oneida schools.
      Alvin proudly served his country with the US Army as a paratrooper with the 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment from 1948 to 1952.
      He married Phyllis A. DeFrees on August 8, 1953 in St. Patrick's Church Oneida.
      Alvin was employed for 25 years as a crane operator with the Pettibone Corp. in Rome retiring in 1984. He then was employed as a custodian at Oneida High School for several years.
      He attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Oneida and had been a member of the former Oneida Moose Lodge #421 in Oneida.
      Surviving are his loving wife Phyllis, one daughter and son-in-law; Colleen and Richard Schneible of Oneida, one son and daughter-in-law; Scott and Janet Thurston of Oneida Castle, six grandchildren; Robyn and Jeff Sanders, Derek Thurston, Dane Thurston, Jenny Bailey, Julie Hatch, Adam Koester , three great-grandsons; Keegan, Adian and Joseph and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by three sisters; May Eminelli, Laura Beach and Rosie Davenport, four brothers; Harry, Kent, James and Hollis Thurston.
      Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday from St. Paul's United Methodist Church 551 Sayles Street Oneida with Rev. Brian Fellows officiating. Interment with military honors will be made in St. Helena's Cemetery Oneida. Friends are invited and may call 2-4 and 6-8 PM Tuesday at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc. 342 Main Street Oneida. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church Memorial Fund 551 Sayles Street Oneida, NY 13421.
