    • Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, June 9, 1971 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Charles Van Buren Dead Following Car Crash - Full military honors were rendered for Charles E. Van Buren, 24 of Richland, who died Tuesday, June 1 of injuries suffered in an auto accident Sunday, May 30. The Rev. Stanley Gleason, pastor of Bombay - Ft. Covington United Methodist Church officiated and burial was in Richland Cemetery. The accident that claimed Van Buren's life occurred on Route 11 in the Town of Ellisburg, when his auto was struck by a north bound car operated by Robert R. Jacobs, Jr. of Mannsville, who according to the police report, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. Jacobs was seriously injured and was given a summons for driving while intoxicated. Van Buren had attempted to avoid the oncoming car by pulling onto the shoulder, but in the attempt to avoid a crash, both cars collided. Charles Van Buren was born April 5, 1947 in Syracuse, son of Raymond and Bertha Lester Van Buren. He had resided in Richland most of his life and was a 1967 graduate of Sandy Creek Central School. He entered the U.S. Army in April of that year, receiving his diploma while in training. He served for a year in Vietnam, receiving the Purple Heart and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry in action. He was discharged in April, 1969. He was employed by Roach and Kimberly, construction firm of Palmyra for a time, and for the past year and a half by Schoeller Technical Papers, Inc. as a coater helper. He is survived by his parents; a sister, Mrs. Ronald (Marion) Bushaw of Pulaski; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lester of Orwell, an aunt and an uncle. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Foster-Hax Funeral Home with military rites rendered by the Robert Edwards Post, American Legion.
