- Robert Freeborn Boots was the sixteenth child of Thomas and Hannah (Tree) Boots. Of all the children sired by Thomas, Robert was the only one born in the United States, thus his middle name. He married Mary Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Lyman and Eveline (Christman) Smith. From this union nine children were born; they were Anguretta, Homer Ward, Emogene, Frederick, George Albert, Lucy Mae, Mary, Sarah Viola and Ellen. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 110th New York Infantry, Co. D on 7 August 1862 and was transferred to the 147th New York Infantry on 22 August 1862.
