      John Vincent Long

      John Vincent Long, 68, of Englewood, FL formerly of Rhode Island, died November 2, 2010. He was born in Watertown, NY, on November 15, 1941, son of the late John V. and Jule Q. Long.

      He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dorla J. Long; daughter, Patricia (John) Vivari of Rhode Island; son, John V. (Barbara) Long of Connecticut; sisters, Anne (Richard) Stover, Kathleen (Walter) Wilmshurst, both of Florida. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, John, Dominic and Lauren Vivari; and Ryan and Justin Long.

      John was a 1959 graduate of Pulaski Academy & Central School, 1964 SUNY at Albany, and 1971 Syracuse University. He began his teaching career at the Manlius Military School, in 1964 as a teacher of mathematics. Upon completion of his Ph.D., he was hired as a researcher in the Curriculum Research and Development Center at the University of Rhode Island. For the next 31 years he became well known as a leader in math education. He was admired by his colleagues, students, and teachers for his dedication to improving mathematics curriculum and teaching innovations. He Chaired the Education Department at the University for nine years and was the Chair of the Faculty Senate. John and Dorla, a URI graduate and former teacher in South Kingstown, RI, retired to Englewood, FL in 2001. John was a member and past president of the Myakka Pines Golf Club and president of the Park Forest Owners Association. He was well known for his leadership abilities and work ethic as well as his love for his family, especially his grandchildren.

      A memorial service will be held in Englewood, FL.
