      Elihu wed Ruth Perry, daughter of Dr. William of Swansea in 1744 (Joan Akin: Swansea is a few towns away fm New Bedford).

      In 1747, Elihu is described in a deed as a ship wright living in Newport. He probably began ship building about 1761 at the Apponagansett. There is good evidence ten years earlier of ship building and fitting of whaling vessels at the Head of the Apponagansett by Daniel Wood and John Wody, and there was ship building near the Head still earlier. So, while there is in existence no certain evidence to that effect, there is a strong probablility that by 1761 Elihu Akin had begun ship building at the foot of Prospect Streeet where he later had a wharf.       From book: Old Dartmouth Historical Sketches: Elihu's house burned down during The Revolution. The Akins had driven 2 Tories out of town (Richard Sherman, Eldad Tupper, and William Castle). They (the Tories) came back with the British and burned Capt. James Akin and Elihu Akin's dwelling and houses and a new brig on the stocks. (Joan Akin: While I can't find the documentation, I'm quite sure that I read that the Tories had been tarred and feathered). Caleb Sherman said, in speaking of the British Raid (March 15, 1840): British fleet in bay Saturday afternoon. Went to Padanarum and burnt Elihu Akins' (sic) house, father to Abram (sic), a 2 story house standing where the Akins house now stands. Also burnt James Akins' house. Set on fire Meribah Akins' house, called the Stone House. Also burnt was a brig on stocks ready to launch owned by Elihu Akins. Elihu and James Akin had a shipyard and in Sept. 1778 a vessel was ready to launch. There is a suggestion that she was to be a privateer.

      Henry Worth confirms this story. He wrote that Elihu was a ship builder and Ship Captain. His ship building business was ruined by the British during the Revolutionary War and that Elihu was building a vessel reputed to be for a privateer when the British burned it and his wharf. He also points out that in honor of this enterprise, the village now known as Padanaram and South Dartmouth was known as Akin's Wharf for twenty years after the Revolutionary War.

      Elihu Akin second house built about 1762 by Job Mosher. It is located on northeast corner of Rockland and Dartmouth Streets at the top of Potter's Hill.
