    • Thomas E. Lawrence Sr., 78, of 17 Taft Place, Dunkirk, formerly of 510 William St., past state president of the Isaac Walton League, died Sunday in Brook Memorial Hospital, Dunkirk, after a brief illness.

      A director of the State Division of the Isaak Walton League of America from 1957 until his death, Mr. Lawrence was engaged in conservation work at local, regional and state levels. He served on the state Fish and Management Board under appointment by then Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller, and served on an advisory group to the Temporary Study Commission on the Future of the Adirondacks. Mr. Lawrence was a member and past president of the Rome Chapter of the Isaak Walton League and was recently honored by that organization for his work on behalf of preservation of natural resources. He was a member of the White Tail Deer Association and the State Trapping Association. A World War I veteran of the Navy, he was also a member of Fort Stanwix Barracks, World War I Veterans.

      He was born in Utica, Jan. 17, 1900, son of Edward Thomas and Ada Fletcher Lawrence. His first wife, the former Nora Tanner, died in 1938. His second wife, Mary Gallivan, is also deceased. Mr. Lawrence owned and operated the Lawrence Sheet Metal Shop in Rome, retiring in 1975. He was an Episcopalian.

      Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Ida) Block and Mrs. Hugh (Adele Cheney, both of Dunkirk, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Evans, Vernon, and Mrs. Robert (Iva) Fransman, Hinckley, a son, Arthur E. Lawrence, Freemont, Calif., a sister, Mrs. Henry (Ida) Golden, Utica, 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. James (Winfred) Stedman, and two sons, Thomas Lawrence Jr., and Neilan Jay Lawrence are deceased.
