    • Obituary for Leila M. Whitman
      Leila Marguerite Whitman, 92, of the Katherine Luther Home, formerly of Rome, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 1, 2012. She was born on January 3, 1920 in Rome; a daughter of the late Maxmillian and Leila Tanner Schaller. Leila was raised in Stanwix and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1937. On July 22, 1944 in Corning, NY Leila was united in marriage to Raymond Whitman; a blessed union of 61 years until his passing which occurred on August 11, 2005. She was employed at General Electric and then Betsy Ross Nursing Home. Leila was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Leila is survived by three daughters, Maxine Nicholson of ME, Karen Martin of Rome, and Becky Myers of Marcy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond “Dusty” and Rena Whitman of Floyd and Bruce and Michelle Whitman of New York Mills; fifteen cherished grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Emogene Mowers and five brothers, Maxwell, Melvin, Thomas “Fritz”, Kenneth, and Warren Schaller. Mrs. Whitman’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00a.m. at the Gulla Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 209 N. Washington St., Rome (336-5700). Interment will follow in Rome Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice. The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the Katherine Luther Home (Applewood Wing) for the care and compassion shown to Leila over the past seven years.
