- Delos B. Hager - 1850 - June 23, 1899. Son of Gardiner and Mary Hager. Husband of Emma S. Hager. Section 2, Row 10.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, June 28, 1899 Mexico Independent - Mexico, New York - Delos Hager and Son Killed by Lightening - Delos Hager, aged 55, and his son, Orla, aged 20, were struck by lightening and instantly killed two miles south of Manlius while seeking refuge beneath a load of hay from a severe electrical and rainstorm which passed over that village and vicinity between 9 and 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. A younger son, who was with the Hagers, the team of horses attached to the load and a dog that had sought shelter with the men beneath the wagon were simultaneously struck by the bolt. The boy was knocked unconscious, the horses and dog were killed and the hay was consumed by fire. The storm was of short duration and passed over the little community without inflicting further damage, as far as is known. The party had loaded their wagon when the grumbling storm first made its appearance, darkening the heavens and foreboding trouble with an occasional roar of thunder and a flash of lightening. The trio started homeward when the rain began to fall in torrents and they sought shelter underneath the overhanging load. They had been there but a short time when a bolt struck the hay and Hager and his son, the team and dog were instantly killed. The younger boy, who was about 14 years old, was rendered insensible, and upon reviving he hastened to the house and notified the family of the catastrophe. The two lifeless bodies were removed to the family home and Dr. Merwin was summoned from Manlius to attend the youth, who had been quite badly burned. Syracuse Post Standard. (Mr. Delos Hager and his family formerly lived at Texas, in this town. He is survived by his widow, a son and daughter. His son Orla leaves a wife and one child. We learn that Orla's life was insured for $1,000. They had many friends in Texas who deeply deplore the sad event, and sympathize sincerely with the stricken ones. The funeral was held at Texas on Sunday, and was very largely attended. Rev. Mr. Brown officiated, assisted by Rev. Mr. Curtis. - Ed. Ind.)
