Newspaper Obituary - Thursday June 27, 1940 Oswego Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Grant Calkins, 72, Dead At Daysville - Was Member of Town Board of Assessors and Prominent Republican - Pulaski, June 27 - Grant Calkins, 71, one of the best known farmers and residents of the Daysville neighborhood, died Wednesday afternoon at the family home on the Daysville-Scenic Highway road after an illness of long duration. Up to a few weeks ago, however, he had been able to make frequent visits to Pulaski. For many years he had been prominent in Republican circles and had held a number of town offices, being a member of the town board of assessors at the time of his death. He had also been prominent in the work of the Daysville grange and in the Patrons of Agriculture Fire Insurance work. He was custodian of the Daysville cemetery for many years. Mr. Calkins' death was the second of an old-time resident of the neighborhood, recently, Mrs. Nellie Harrington, a neighbor, having passed away Tuesday. Mr. Calkins was born May 19, 1869, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Calkins, pioneer residents of that section. He had always made his home on the banks of the Grindstone Creek and was the last of a large family who at one time owned most of the farms in the Daysville section. Fred Calkins of Pulaski, a distant cousin, living in Pulaski, is one of the last of the name in this section of the state. The survivors are his wife, Mrs. Anna Doane Calkins; one daughter, Mrs. May Hotchkiss; one grandson, John Hotchkiss; and a nephew, Guy Salisbury, all of Port Ontario and Daysville. Funeral services will be conducted at the family home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev. R. Norris Wilson of the Congregational church and burial will be in Daysville cemetery.
