Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, June 8, 1944 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Mrs. Mary E. Barnes Dies in Richland - Mrs. Mary Ellen Bates Barnes, our dear beloved mother, passed away May 17th at the home of her son, Henry Barnes and daughter, Mrs. Gladys Lago. Born of humble parents in Waterport, she passed her girlhood days there near the bank of a brook and from her birth on November 17, 1871 until about the age of 18, she had scarcely been outside of Orleans County. Her parents, Mr. Reuben Bates and Emer Chapin Bates, had ten children, five of them died in early life, leaving four boys and one girl. One by one, the other children passed away and Mrs. Barnes was the last of her family. There is also a niece, Mary Bates VanWycke of Waterport. Mrs. Barnes made many friends during her life, being of an amiable disposition. Only a few of her girlhood friends are now living, but those few were her dear friends to the end. In June 1900 she became the wife of Elmer E. Barnes of Dugway, who died several years ago. Mr. Barnes, shortly after their marriage, began the business of harvesting nursery moss. This vocation necessitated their moving frequently to different places though never outside of Oswego county and finally in 1906 to the vicinity of Richland where her home was until her death. She became a Christian in early life and lived a consistent Christian life to the end. She was a member of the Richland Methodist church and the local W. C. T. U. and was greatly interested in the Richland Holiness camp meeting. She was a godly mother and enjoyed a wide circle of friends. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Rossman of Coudersport, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Gladys Lago of Richland and Mrs. Thelma Cronk of Watertown; five sons, Henry of Watertown, Glenn of New Centerville, Guy and Kenneth of Syracuse and Gerald of Cable, Ohio. The latter is a Nazarene preacher in Kennard, Ohio. The funeral was held on May 20th at the home and interment was in Richland cemetery. Rev. Mrs. D. M. Cobb, pastor of the Richland Methodist church conducted the service assisted by Rev. Ernest Swarthout, pastor of the Nazarene church of Watertown.
