Newspaper Obituary - Saturday, September 28, 1946 Oswego Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Retired Pastor Expires Friday - Rev. G. D. Purdy of Richland Was Missionary to Jamaica, West Indies - Pulaski - Rev. G. D. Purdy, retired missionary to Jamaica, British West Indies, died Friday at his home in Richland. He was in his 89th year and had been a resident of Richland for many years following his retirement from active preaching. Born in Penn Yan November 17, 1857, he received his early education in Penn Yan Academy. He married Miss Alice Willet of Monterey, New York, on January 1, 1880. He was converted during a Methodist evangelistic service in Richland and preached his first sermon in Lacona. After a pastorate in Harrisville of four years he was called by the Mission Board of the Disciples of Christ to take charge of the Jamaica mission going there in 1878. After 24 years of service he and Mrs. Purdy returned to Richland and he afterward held pastorates in Brewerton, Versailles and Pompey, New York. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Willis Traphagen of Richland; two nephews, Thad Purdy of _teney and Frank Purdy of Brooklyn. Funeral services will be held at his home Monday at 2 p.m. by Rev. Thomas Miller, state secretary of the United Christian Missionary Society. He will be buried in Richland Cemetery.
