      Herbert C. Tanner, 96, of 164 W. Schuyler St. died Wednesday at Oswego Hospital.

      A native of Altmar, Mr. Tanner resided most of his life in Oswego. He was a carpenter and was the owner and operator of Tanner & Son Builders and Contractors in Oswego. He was the oldest living member of Local 747, Carpenters Union. His first wife, the former Alsada Noftz, died in 1952.

      Mr. Tanner was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oswego and the Southwest Oswego Senior Citizens.

      Surviving are his wife, the former Florence Smith; a daughter, Betty Brown of Pulaski; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Mosher of Oswego and Jean Schiller of San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Herbert D. and Donald D., both of Oswego; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

      Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church. Spring burial will be in Rural Cemetery.

      Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Nelson Funeral Home, 124 W. Fifth St.

      Contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Oswego.
