Raymond H. Howard, 16, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgel Howard of Parish, was electrocuted Sunday night as he stepped into the bathtub in his home that was charged by electricity because of a short circuit in the electric pump. Because of the defective pump the water filling the tub was electrified and the youth was severely burned as he entered the water. The family had noticed sparks in the faucets but failed to find the cause of the charge. It was believed first that the victim had tried to pull the light switch and that had caused his death. The short circuit in the pump was discovered following the tragedy and men from the Parish Oil Company removed the machine.
The accident was discovered by his 7-yr-old sister, Brenda, who called her mother and told her the youth was dead. The girl told authorities that she heard a noise in the bathroom and upon investigation found her brother dead. She also hurried to the home of a neighbor, Mrs. Nellie House, to get help. Mrs. Viola Howard, mother of the victim, arrived home first and pulled the body of her son from the bathtub. He was severely burned about the chest. His mother was working at the Candlelight Cottage in Parish and his father was called from his work at the Crucible Steel Co.; Syracuse, where he is a guard. Members of the Parish Fire Department were called to the Howard home and they used an inhalator for an hour and a half in an unsuccessful effort to revive the youth. His clothing was nearby in a neat pile.
The Howard youth was a freshman at the Altmar-Parish Central School. He played on the school baseball and basketball teams. Formerly he had played in the school band, but gave it up for sports. He was a native of Parish.
Surviving are his parents, his sister, a brother. John Howard, his grandmothers, Mrs. Mabel Howard of Dugway and Mrs. Rose Britton of Williamstown; six uncles, five aunts and several cousins.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at one-thirty with prayer at the home. Church services were held in the Parish Methodist church at 2 o'clock with Rev. Richard Hudson and Charles Elwanger, local pastors, officiating. Burial was made in Pleasant Lawn cemetery.
