- EX-MEXICO TOWN JUSTICE ARTHUR BACKUS DIES
Watertown Daily Times (NY) - April 13, 1995
Arthur E. Backus, 75, Seber Shores Road, died Monday at Orlando (Fla.) Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Harter Funeral Home, Mexico, with the Rev. Kathy Turnbull officiating. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Surviving are his wife, the former Verna Petrie; three sons, Douglas and Jeffrey, both of Mexico, and Pete, Hamilton, and five grandchildren.
Born June 10, 1919, in Oxford, son of Ellis and Grace Cowen Backus, he graduated from Parish High School and served in the Army during World War II with the 14th Armored Tank Division in Germany.
He married Verna Marie Petrie on July 6, 1946, at the Pulaski Methodist Church with the Rev. James N. Pauley officiating.
Mr. Backus lived in Mexico for many years before moving to Sandy Creek in 1988. He owned and operated Mobile Flame Petroleum in Mexico for 25 years.
He served as Mexico town justice for 12 years and was a member of Park United Methodist Church, Pulaski, and Edick-Hamlink Post 369, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
