Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, April 18, 1889 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Killed by a Fall - On Friday evening of last week, a little after nine o'clock a number of young gentlemen who were just leaving the academy, saw two men pass. Both were considerably intoxicated as it appeared. They were watched and as they undertook to walk the planks leading to the new bridge, when within a few feet of that structure and perhaps fifteen feet from the ground, they fell. They struck heavily on the rocks beneath and one of them, named Mott Hough, was picked up unconscious. Although medical aid was summoned he never recovered consciousness, and died on Saturday before noon. The other man, whose name at this writing we have not learned, was not seriously hurt, although at first he was thought to have sustained internal injuries. It is a very narrow escape for him, however. This is another of the many cases of "too much whiskey," and ought to have its restraining effect, but it will not. Men who drink whiskey are never deterred from so doing by all the murders, the brutalities, the suicides, the fatalities of every kind that come through the habit. They simply say, "that fellow was foolish to take so much; I never drink more than is good for me," and pass on to still greater dissipation.
Later - Inquest Held - Upon the death of Mr. Hough, Coroner Nelson, of Orwell, was notified and that official came to this village on Sunday. He summoned the following names who served as jurors: A. R. Jones, Foreman; G. F. Adams, M. D., A. A. Maltby, W. H. Paddock, Z. Kiblin, Hon. J. Preston, A. C. Brown, H. M. Ellis, M. D. Bumpus, W. G. Scott. The following named witnesses were sworn and their evidence taken: Minot Bennett, Elton Averill, Merton Kelley, Howard Naylor, Frank Chrisman, Will Box, Louis June, Dr. F. S. Low, Dr. H. W. Caldwell and Thomas McGowan. The first seven names, testified to seeing the parties fall from the plank. The physicians swore as to the cause of death and the last named witness was with deceased and fell with him. After the evidence was all in, the jury, after deliberation, rendered the following verdict: "That deceased came to his death by accidentally stepping off the plank leading from the bank to the North end of the new bridge over the Salmon River, at 9:15 p.m., April 12, '89, and that no blame is attached to anyone.
