- Newspaper Obituary - Monday, April 9, 1973 The Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Parish - Car Leaves Road - Pulaski Area Youth Dies In Rt. 81 Crash at Cicero - Cicero - An 18-year-old Pulaski area youth was killed early this morning when his eastbound sedan left Interstate Route 81 a tenth of a mile east of the northbound ramp of Interstate Route 481 in the Town of Cicero and overturned. Pronounced dead on arrival at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital, Syracuse, in the NAVAC ambulance from North Syracuse was Edward R. LaPoint, son of Lt. Col. Robert F. LaPoint, U. S. Army retired, and Florence I. LaPoint of Route 3, Pulaski RD 1. An autopsy was ordered by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner, Dr. Martin F. Hilfinger Jr. to determine cause of death. Trooper Pail M Ammerman of North Syracuse Zone Headquarters headed the investigation, reporting that at 1:30 a.m. the youth was operating a four-door sedan owned by his mother when the car skidded sideways approximately 150 feet at the Route 481 northbound entrance ramp, catapulting over a guard rail. It was airborne, hitting 50 feet down and then bouncing 30 feet flipped over, landing upside down and then bouncing 30 feet beyond before finally landing on its roof after rolling over. The driver was wearing his seat belt, investigators said. Assisting in the investigation were Trooper S. E. Weidman and Sgt. L. P. Kettenhofen of the North Syracuse Zone Headquarters. The youth's father owns and operated the Chedmardo Store and Campsite on Route 3 near Selkirk Shores State Park. He was born August 20, 1935, in Stuttgar, Germany where his father, Lt. Col. Robert LaPoint was stationed. His mother was the former Florence Partrick. In June 1972 he graduated from Pulaski Academy and Central School and was then employed at the Duell Saw Mill at Demster. The past three months he had been a coil assembler at Carrier Corp., member of Local 527, Sheetmetal Workers Union and of the Mexico Presbyterian Church, racer at the State Fair Grounds. He was active in the PACS school band. Last winter he was a professional snowmobile racer in Syracuse and was a member of the U. S. Snowmobile Association. Besides his parents he is survived by a twin brother, Charles David, another brother, Donald J., 13, and a sister, Mary Lou LaPoint, 17, all at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home here, the Rev. Elmer Ellison of Mexico Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Daysville Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
