- Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, April 5, 1911 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Henry J. Orton, 78 years old died at 12:30 o'clock March 29 at his home, mile and a half north of Pulaski. Mr. Orton has been failing in health for nearly five years, eight weeks ago he was confined to his bed with severe illness which caused his death. He bore intense suffering without a murmur putting his whole trust in his blessed Saviour. Mr. Orton was born in Williamstown, New York. When at the age of 14 years old he moved with his father and mother on a farm near Richland. Shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Orton enlisted in Company C, one hundred and forty-seventh New York Volunteer Infantry. He served until the close of war, he was present in nearly all of the large battles fought. In one battle his life was saved by a small testament which he carried in his breast pocket which deadened the speed of a bullet by which it was struck, the bullet lodged in the testament severing every leaf, his only injury from it was a slight flesh wound. After the war Mr. Orton bought a farm near Pulaski where he has since resided. He was greatly interested in church work also a member of G. A. R. Besides his widow, Mrs. Maria Wood Orton, he is survived by five children, Mrs. Charlotte Frary, of Pulaski; Mrs. Alice Dean, of Mexico; Mr. Jacob Orton, Pineville; Mrs. Betsy Wells, Wellington; Mrs. Dora Miller, Syracuse. Lines on the death of our father, Henry J. Orton, who died March 31st, 1911, age 78 years.
