Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, May 26, 1960 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Mrs. Roland, Richland, Dies - Mrs. Persis Sprague Roland, 88, widow of Frank E. Roland, died Monday at her home in Richland where she had resided the past 40 years. Services will be held Thursday at her late home at 2 p.m. and at the Church of Christ at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. E. J. Waterstripe of Sweet Valley, Pennsylvania, a former pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Richland Cemetery. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Cecile R. McElver of Richland; a brother, Orla B. Sprague of Richland; a grandson, L. Parker Godfrey, of Belleville, who lived with his grandmother from shortly after birth until 1942 when he enlisted in the army; four other grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A son, Carl Roland, died in 1943 in Syracuse. Mrs. Roland was born at Sandy Creek August 31, 1871, the daughter of William and Augusta Brewer Sprague. She was married to Mr. Roland at Sandy Creek in 1889. Following their marriage they lived in Richland for six years after which they moved to Oswego and later to Utica where Mr. Roland died in 1920 at the age of 53. He was a conductor for the New York Central Railroad for 35 years. After his death she returned to Richland to reside with her mother and has remained since that time. She was a charter member of the O. E. S. in Oswego and attended the West Baptist Church there. She was the oldest member of the Church of Christ in Richland.
