- Newspaper Obituary - September 14, 1991 Post Standard - Syracuse, New York - EARL D. POTTER, 75 - WAS FORMER NY GRANGE HORSESHOE CHAMP - Earl D. Potter, 75, of County Route 52 died Friday at the home of his daughter in Syracuse. A native of LaFargeville, Mr. Potter lived in the Orwell area 50 years. He retired in 1981 after 15 years with Schoeller Technical Papers and previously was a self-employed carpenter and farmer. Mr. Potter was a member of the Northeast Oswego County Horseshoe Pitchers Association and Pulaski Grange 730. He was Grange New York State Horseshoe Champion from 1987 to 1990 and won a gold medal in the event at the 1990 New York State Senior Games in Cortland. His wife, the former Alice H. Mattison, died in 1985. Mr. Potter was a member of Orwell United Methodist Church, the New York State Old Tyme Fiddlers Association and the Upstate New York Blue Bird Society. He was president of the Bluff Hill Rod & Gun Club. He was a 55-year member of the Arbeit Lodge 168, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, in Mexico. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Potter was a life member and former commander and chaplain of Russell-Tryon Post 1435, American Legion, in Altmar. Surviving are two sons, Albert L. of Manlius and David J. of Pulaski; three daughters, Ann M. Hagadorn of Syracuse, Barbara P. Mousaw of Wilkesboro, N.C., and Ellen E. Potter of Rochester; a foster son, Ralph Steele of Oswego; a brother, Paul R. of Redfield; and six grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Orwell. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 7385 Park St. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Central New York, PO Box 69, Syracuse 13208.
