Muriel McGough Cole, a resident of 118 East 7th Street, Oswego, died at the Oswego Hospital on October 21, 2012 after a brief illness. Born in Oswego on April 30, 1922, she was the daughter of Thomas H. McGough and Belle (Meagher) McGough. A graduate of St. Mary's School and the Oswego High School (1940 class Valedictorian), Muriel received her B.A. degree in English in 1944 from the College of New Rochelle. She graduated with an M.A. degree in English Literature from Syracuse University in 1947. In the same year she received her permanent Teacher's Certificate from the State of New York. Muriel began her career in the Oswego City School District in 1944 teaching 9th grade English and Latin at Kingsford Park School. By the mid-1960s she taught 10th grade English and Humanities and 1st year Latin at the Oswego High School. She also spent a year at Fitzhugh Park School as a Library Science instructor and supervisor of the Library. Muriel retired from teaching in 1978, after which she taught 10th grade religious education at St. Paul's Catholic Church. In addition, she taught confirmation classes and trained both parochial and public school 6th grade students how to proclaim the scriptures for Sunday Mass. Her mother, Belle McGough, introduced duplicate contract bridge to Oswego in 1934. Mrs. McGough taught contract bridge and directed the duplicate tournaments until her death in 1946. After her mother's death, Muriel - a lifelong bridge player - directed the duplicate bridge tournaments for 11 years. Married in 1948 to James A. Cole Sr., Muriel and her husband enjoyed bridge and playing two-piano duets. They traveled frequently and were avid concert and theatre goers. She was a member of the Winter Club and for several years reviewed books on a wide range of topics including history, biography, sociology and science. Predeceased by her husband in 2005 and her son James in 2008, Muriel is survived by her sons, David M. (Karen Henry) of Monument, Colorado and Mark L. of Oswego; and grandsons, James Cole-Henry of Enfield, New Hampshire and Darren Cole-Henry of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Church on October 25 at 10:30 a.m. Entombment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery immediately following the service. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 East Second Street, Oswego, NY 13126.
