    • Obituary (from newspaper of 21 April 1970): SYRACUSE---Fred McConnell, 86, North Syracuse, formerly of Sackets Harbor, Three Mile Bay and Grindstone Island, died Monday after a short illness. The funeral will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Ferguson Funeral Home, North Syracuse, Rev. Lloyd F. Shephard, officiating. Burial will be in North Watertown Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Surviving are eight daughters, Mrs. Benjamin (Emma) Strait, Lakeland, Mrs. Clarence (Jessie) Majo, Cape Vincent, Mrs. Cecil (Jenny) Brown, Adams, Mrs. Clyde (Lana) Jordon, Boston, Mass., Mrs. Wealtha Prior, Watertown, Mrs. John (Doris) Mahoney, North Syracuse, Mrs. Robert (Etta) VanAlstyne, Feridina Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Howard (Altha) Stewart, Marathon; eight sons, George, Canastota, Leland, California, Calvin, Adams, Albert and Chester, Watertown, Olin, Boston, Mass., Warren, Fernwood, and Melzer, Mexico; 64 grandchildren; 98 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Born in Odessa, Ont., July 23, 1884, son of John and Emma McConnell, moved to Syracuse as a young man and was employed in an undertaking business. He married Miss Edith Calhoun, a native of Grindstone Island, in Suracuse on Aug. 6, 1905. About 1912, Mr. and Mrs. McConnell moved to a farm on Grindstone Island. Later, they were on farms near Sackets Harbor and Three Mile Bay before going to Fernwood, where they farmed 20 years. Mrs. McConnell died Feb. 19, 1962, in the House of the Good Samaritan.
